Background Information

Forest Research (FR) is the research agency of the Forestry Commission, a world leader in applied forest science and a trusted and recognised provider of expertise, data, products and services for governments and the tree, wood, forest and natural resource sectors.

This is a new role, and as Head of Pathology, you will provide leadership to around 14 pathologists within the Science Group, and management of staff and resources, as well as using your scientific expertise to undertake research, provide advice and represent FR to external customers and stakeholders.

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

The Head of Pathology role will take up approximately 30% of your time. The remainder of the time (70%) will be focussed upon scientific activities, including research, diagnostic and advisory work funded through core programmes, and external contracts. As Head of Pathology, you will be required to:

Lead the Pathology Team within the Tree Health Science Group, coordinate its work, communications and development, and provide strategic direction. Collaborate closely with the senior roles across the Tree Health teams and wider science centre including programme managers to ensure activities across all parts of Tree Health are coordinated effectively.

Manage staff (three direct reports), fostering team spirit and team working, and encouraging personal development.

Manage the team’s resources (including staff, laboratories, and other resources) through budgetary responsibility and monitoring.

Report on and represent the Pathology team internally, as well as more broadly represent the team, Science Centre and FR in external meetings.

Progress a programme of science and advice, working collaboratively, aligned to FR’s priorities and your own expertise, funded through core programmes and competitively won contracts.

Lead and support the development of new funding bids, and the development and operation of collaborations with appropriate external research organisations and universities, for joint research and publication, and through post-graduate students.

Maintain and develop contacts with stakeholders and customers for FR pathology activities and related expertise.

Ensure staff in the team use and adhere to FR corporate systems and processes, including H&S, quality systems and communication procedures.

Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or another relevant professional body is desirable.
