The Functional Nanomaterials is a part of Chemistry and Advanced Materials Unit within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Tampere University. The research in the newly formed Functional Nanomaterials Research Group focuses on new generation functional material design for advanced applications. The research interests are broad, ranging from supramolecular chemistry, functional metal nanoparticles, hydrogels, and advanced materials for biomedical applications. The group also has expertise in the detailed characterization of nanomaterials (high-resolution electron microscopy, cryo-TEM, electron tomography), soft materials (rheology), composite materials (tensile and compression testing) and solid-state NMR. The group has active academic and industrial collaboration with several international and national research groups in nanomaterials and cancer biology.
Job Description
The Functional Nanomaterials research group is looking for a talented and highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to start in Autumn 2020. The doctoral thesis work of the Doctoral Researcher is funded for four years. The focus of the thesis project will be on developing Nanoparticle-based Sensors. The sensors will respond to various environmental conditions, selectively sense contaminants or analyte for developing rapid detection tools, for example, pathogen detection and cancer diagnostics.
In the project, the candidate will focus on the synthesis and characterization of metal nanoparticles, develop sensor platforms, and study their application together with our collaborators. The Doctoral Candidate will get assistance, supervision and training from experienced senior researchers. Besides, the duties of the Doctoral Researcher will include teaching, amounting to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.
Requirements
The successful candidate must hold an applicable higher university degree in the field of chemistry materials science, nanoscience, or the interface of chemistry and biology. The candidate must have the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies in materials science and complete a doctoral degree.
The successful candidate should be highly motivated in research activities. The candidate should have a background in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, biomaterials, bioscience, or a related field. Experience in laboratory work, nanoparticle synthesis, bioconjugation, working with microscopes or material modeling, and simulation skills are considered beneficial. Since the project will involve collaboration with other disciplines, it is expected that excellent oral and written communication skills and a good knowledge of the English language (both written and spoken) are required.
