Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d) – Project A05 „Future Roads“

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.

The Collaborative Research Center CRC-TRR 228 „Future Rural Afri-ca. Future-making and social-ecological transformation“ combines expertise from the two Universities of Bonn and Cologne to study newly emerging issues of social-ecological transformation and future-making in Africa. Project (A05) “Future Roads“ aims at quantifying the impacts of road construction on land use change and soil-related ecosystem services in Kenya, and inivites applications for 1 doctoral researcher.

YOUR TASKS

  • Conducting fieldwork in rural Kenya
  • Analysing soil-related ecosystem services
  • Gathering and analysing remote sensing and land-use change data
  • Preparing a stakeholder workshop
  • Developing a PhD thesis
  • Writing of scientific, project-related publications
  • Presentation of research findings at scientific conferences
  • Participation in and contribution to regular team meetings in Cologne and Bonn

YOUR PROFILE

  • A M.Sc. or equivalent degree in physical geography, geoecology, environmental sciences or related fields
  • Excellent knowledge of concepts and theories in land use change, spatial data analysis, modelling, and statistics; solid knowledge in soil science and soil hydrology
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently for extended periods of time (e.g., for field work in Kenya)
  • Good knowledge of R and GIS, experience in lab work (e.g., for basic soil analysis)
  • flexible, team-oriented and interested in continuing your professional development

The position is available from the 01.04.2022 on a part-time basis (65%). It is limited to the 31.12.2025. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the Ger-man public sector.
