The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
The department Environmental Biotechnology is inviting applications for a
Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f/x)
Working time: 100% (39 hours per week), limited to June 30, 2023 from September 2020 earliest.
Your tasks:
One goal in this project is the initiation of the research platform “”Activity Proteomics””. In this platform we want to establish a workflow for the functional description of genes and their encoded proteins, with relevance in environmental biotechnology. We intend to implement molecular methods that allow the detection and characterization of enzymatic activities at microgram quantities of protein. Possible methods include adapted standard biochemical separation methods, native gel electrophoresis, protein mass spectrometry (e.g. activity-dependent as in thermal protein profiling), and isotope labeling.
With the established workflow we want to characterize a range of microbial processes that are already part of our research portfolio (anammox, organohalide respiration, plastics degradation, pesticide fate in soil, contaminant fate in constructed wetlands), but invite applicants to also pursue their own research interest within the field of environmental biotechnology. This includes but is not restricted to syngas fermentation, fuel/commodity chemical production, nitrogen metabolism, phosphate recovery, urban mining, etc. We search for an ambitious candidate who sees this as an opportunity to start her/his own research group and who heads for an own young researcher group in the near future.
Your profile:
We expect a university degree in life sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or similar), doctoral/PhD degree not older than 6-7 years and publications in referenced journals. International experience, teaching experience and own project applications are a plus.
Send your application as a single pdf-file <10 MB. Please include a cover letter with a 1-2 page concept for a workflow for enzyme activity screening at microgram quantities and a 1-2 page concept for research on your scientific topic. Please include also a CV, scans of degrees and contact data of 2 referees.
We offer:
• Our department is technically well equipped and offers a productive, international and inclusive environment
• Support in setting up life in Leipzig, in setting up the research line and in writing an application for a young researcher group
• Opportunity to obtain teaching experience at the Institute for Biotechnology, TU Berlin
• A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
• Remuneration up to the TVöD public-sector pay grade 13 including attractive public-sector social security benefits
The UFZ has a strong commitment to diversity and actively supports equal opportunities for all employees regardless of their origin, religion, ideology, disability, age or sexual identity. We look forward to applications from people who are open-minded and enjoy working in diverse teams.
