Your new Role
Simon Fraser University, Burnaby Mountain Campus, is seeking an Associate Director, Mechanical. As the Associate Director, Mechanical you will be responsible for the following: ensures the maintenance and operation of the physical plant associated with the mechanical systems of the Burnaby Mountain campus. Oversees the effective maintenance and operation of all mechanical systems, including the boiler plant, central heating systems, central compressed air systems, building HVAC and hydronic systems, gas and fuel systems, plumbing, water distribution systems, storm and sanitary sewer systems and like systems. Develops, implements and monitors annual maintenance and operations plans and programs to address both annual maintenance and operations needs and deferred maintenance requirements. Advocates and promotes energy management and sustainability and participates on the energy management committee. Advocates for and implements industry best practices by keeping up-to-date with changes and new concepts in the field of applied sciences, maintenance and operations, and related areas through attendance at courses, seminars, conferences and other professional activities. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director, Maintenance & Operations.
What you’ll need to Succeed
To succeed as the Associate Director, Mechanical you will have your Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Professional Engineer Designation with 8+ years of experience. You will have experience managing mechanical divisions in a large, unionized environment/ facility and providing financial, staff, and capital project leadership; experience in the application & interpretation of Collective Agreements or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng) with eight years related experience, including experience managing mechanical divisions in a large, unionized environment/facility and providing financial, staff, and capital project leadership; experience in the application & interpretation of Collective Agreements or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Superior knowledge of building mechanical systems and mechanical equipment.
- Excellent knowledge of energy and sustainability techniques.
- Excellent knowledge Technical Safety BC requirements.
- Good knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal codes, regulations and acts.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- Excellent leadership, strategic planning, and financial management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to conduct project analysis and risk assessment in order to develop the business case for proposed projects.
- Ability to concurrently manage staff and contractors responsible for the completion of multiple complex projects.
- Ability to demonstrate a high level of initiative and independence.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful situations and outside normal working hours, and ability to respond appropriately to emergencies.
