PhD Position (F/M/D) – Institute For Zoology – Bast Lab

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. The newly established Bast lab is looking for a PhD student to join the team. The DFG funded project will identify the (population) genomic singularities that allow some exceptional species to persist in the absence of sex over evolutionary time. YOUR TASKS

  • Generate and analyze genomes from asexuals and sexual non-model species using state-of-the-art technology
  • Identify the genomic signatures contributing to speciation
  • Identify genomic singularities of ancient asexuals such as e.g. increased genomic plasticity and genetic diversity in a comparative framework
  • Train fellow lab members in bioinformatics
  • Preparation of a PhD thesis with a tentative title: “The genomic signatures of ancient asexuals” Mitarbeit in Forschung und Lehre in den Arbeitsgebieten de

YOUR PROFILE

  • A MSc in biological sciences, bioinformatics or related fields
  • You are self-motivated, organized and creative
  • You have experience in genome assembly, comparative genomics and analyzing (population-) genomic data of non-model species
  • You have programming skills, e.g. in Python and R, as well as skills in statistics
  • You enjoy working in an international environment you enjoy working in and with a diverse team

The position is available from November 1st, 2020 on a part-time basis (65%). It is limited to two years with possible extension up to a total of 4 years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group TV-L 13 of the pay scale for the German public sector.
