It is home to more than 170 regular rank faculty, approximately 1,300 undergraduates, and almost 1,700 graduate students. In the past decade, external research funding has nearly doubled, with new awards to Duke Engineering rising by 43 percent in the past five years.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is perennially in the top five of U.S.News & World Report rankings, with a current ranking of 3rd in the graduate program and 4th in the undergraduate program. It is known for its strong ties to Duke’s School of Medicine (ranked 3rd in the nation) and its academic medical center. The department is world-renowned for achievements in research areas of the field, including bioelectric engineering; biomaterials; biomechanics and mechanobiology; biomedical and health data science; biomedical imaging and biophotonics; biosensors and bioinstrumentation; computational modeling of biological systems; drug and gene delivery; immune engineering; neural engineering; synthetic and systems biology; and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Applicants for the position must have a record of inspiring leadership as well as a broad vision for the field of biomedical engineering and its role in addressing the grand challenges of our time. In addition to exceptional leadership experience, the candidate must have established excellence in, and show exceptional promise for, high-quality research, teaching, and professional development. Duke encourages interdisciplinary collaboration as well as entrepreneurial activities, which serve to broaden the societal impact of our research and teaching.
