Our Health and Medical Sciences journals organization with the Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organization of Elsevier has an opening for a new Executive Publisher within the oncology portfolio. This is an exciting opportunity to drive our strategy around content development, open access publishing and managing the growth of a high-profile portfolio of primarily society-owned titles. This role has a large focus on relationship and business management of society accounts, contract negotiation and management and the continued growth and development of our team’s ambitious plan to meet global oncology market needs.
Purpose of the Role:
The Executive Publisher develops the strategy for a portfolio, helps develop goals and monitors the progress. The Executive Publisher plays an instrumental role in developing and maintaining a network of the relevant key decision makers within oncology. They also participate and/or lead exciting and creative projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects elsewhere within Elsevier to provide STMJ representation. Such projects will be relevant for the department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization. The Executive Publisher has a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and is a lead example to and a coach/mentor for Senior Publishers, Publishers and Associate Publishers.
Our Requirements:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a Publisher/Exec Publisher working for a commercial journal publisher. Experience with oncology publications is a plus
- Experience managing Society relationships and negotiations highly preferred
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree; preference for an advanced degree
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Strategic, customer-centric mindset with an eye towards business development
- Broad scientific interests and a passion for helping researchers and clinicians share and publish their work
- Collaboration, relationship-management and networking skills are core aspects of the job; enthusiasm for working with people is a must
- A dynamic, results-oriented approach to goals and objectives
- A good understanding of digital communication, publishing trends, and open access publishing
- Creativity, willingness to experiment, and desire to improve; positive attitude is critical
- Strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize, focus, and achieve desired goals
- Willingness to travel at least 20% of the time (in non-COVID times)

Division information:
This role is part of the Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organization. In total STMJ consists of approximately 660 staff based from offices in the UK, USA, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Germany, China, Japan, Australia, South Korea and India. It is responsible for publishing over 1800 journal titles (24% of the global market), with new journal launches and society contract acquisitions ensuring annual growth. There are 3 vertical publishing units: Life Sciences & Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Health & Medical Sciences, headed up by a SVP. Each unit has 5 to 8 scientific/specialty areas, headed up by a Publishing Director, and is responsible for the strategic approach to their specific audiences which consist of authors, editors, researchers and societies, amongst others.
