POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking xwmәθkwәy̓әm (Musqueam people), the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Language Education as Anti-Oppressive Transformation in Multilingual Settings. Within this broader focus, we invite candidates with a primary specialization in writing in an additional language, language assessment, or language policy. The scholar hired into this professoriate stream position will collaborate with our colleagues and graduate students to galvanize innovative research opportunities to advance antiracist, decolonial, and anti-oppressive transformation in one or more of these specializations. The scholar is expected to have a program of research that centers the effects of power in language and literacy education which is increasingly required to embrace multilingualism and other kinds of diversity. This position is expected to commence July 1, 2022 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate).
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants should have a PhD or EdD in Language and/or Literacy Education, Applied Linguistics, or a related field at the time of application. They must demonstrate a genuine commitment to and evidence of engagement in antiracism and anti-oppressive language education; a strong established record of scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications, public scholarship, and presentations; the evidence of effective teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in language and/or literacy education; experience and expertise to supervise Master’s and Doctoral students; and bi/multilingual competence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual hired will complement existing strengths and research interests in both applied language studies in education (TESL, modern languages, heritage language, Indigenous language revitalization) and literacy education within LLED. The successful candidate is expected to (a) teach in both undergraduate and graduate programs, including courses in the Teacher Education Program; (b) supervise Master’s and PhD students; (c) be engaged in sustained and productive scholarly activity, including securing external research funding; and (d) contribute to scholarly and educational communities and service work of the Department, the Faculty of Education, and the University. The annual teaching load for this position is 4 courses (12 credits).
This is a tenure-track position in the Professoriate Stream. The successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment and promotion in subsequent years in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience and by their placement on the career progress scale within the UBC Faculty of Education.
