The Institute for Feminist and Gender Studies and the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa are located on the unceded territory of the Algonquin people.

The anthropology program of the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies and the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa wish to fill a regular joint position of professor who is interested in contemporary Indigenous issues. . For example, food sovereignty and nutrition, environmental anthropology, indigenous resistance and / or resurgence, two-spirit and queer studies, decolonial and anti-colonial critiques, and this from a transnational perspective.

Candidates will be called upon to teach at the Institute for Feminist and Gender Studies and Anthropology at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies, in equal parts. The selected candidate will be able to choose his / her main institutional attachment between the two units.

Job title  : Assistant professor.

Duties : The responsibilities of the incumbent include teaching graduate courses, supervising graduate students, and a sustained commitment to research and service to the community. The successful candidate will be an essential resource for the development of indigenous content in university education. It must attest to a solid research program, and demonstrate a commitment to participate in the administrative activities of the unit and the faculty. Given the nature of the position,  preference will be given to Indigenous people who have verifiable ties to their Indigenous community.

Affirming that indigenous peoples are knowledge creators in their own right, the successful candidate will have to open spaces for key conversations on knowledge structures as expressed in their field of research as well as on the possibilities of partnership and co-development of research projects within Aboriginal communities and organizations, and also with other non-university actors.

Conditions:  Position leading to tenure.

Salary:  The salary scale for an assistant professor starts at $ 88,735 (according to the scale in effect on May 1, 2022).

Prerequisites:

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • A doctorate in anthropology, indigenous studies, feminist and gender studies, or a related field. Exceptional applicants who do not have a PhD will be considered if they hold recognized indigenous knowledge, have ties to indigenous communities, use indigenous research and teaching methods, or have outstanding academic work recognized by other Indigenous researchers.
  • Expertise in one (or more) of the following areas: indigenous food, land, kinship and / or legal orders, the role of language in indigenous knowledge and worldviews, indigenous ways of knowing, social theory, research methodologies, social justice, social inequality, cultural studies, or different fields of interest such as indigenous communities, decolonization, education, social movements, political anthropology.
  • The demonstration of an established and innovative research program, or one that demonstrates a potential for excellence through a peer-reviewed publication file or including other forms of knowledge mobilization.
  • The capacity, or the potential, to raise external funds and / or to develop projects in co-creation with communities, organizations or other non-university actors.
  • Demonstrated willingness to acquire the skills required to participate in the life of the two units, in French and in English.
