HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) and Emerging Infection Diseases (EID) branch located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. The candidate will be supporting projects related to emerging infectious diseases and will be working closely with other bioinformaticians. The candidate will analyze next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods such as whole transcriptome RNA-Seq, single-cell RNA-Seq, Rep-seq in the context of human cohorts from vaccine trials of emerging infectious diseases.
Responsibilities:
- Designs and Implements analysis for NGS as assigned in a high-performance computing environment.
- Builds analytical workflows for automated deployment of bioinformatics tools for interpreting NGS data.
- Responsible for maintaining/extending bioinformatics workflows, improving efficiency, and facilitating QC activities.
- Perform other duties as related to the position such as data and project management to ensure data is being processed in an efficient and timely manner.
- Contributes to writing scientific manuscripts.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience working with a Linux cluster environment. Proficiency with Perl and/or Python. Can work independently.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience with next generation sequencing platforms and analysis such as RNA-Seq, single-cell RNA-Seq and BCR-TCR analysis. Experience working with job scheduling such as LSF, PBS, or SLURM.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s degree required, PHD preferred in computational biology or bioinformatics, or a related field, and experience/expertise in manipulation and analysis of large data sets, including assembly of genomes, analysis of sequences, and related studies. Good time management skills, and ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
Minimum Experience: 1-2 years experience. Fresh PhD graduates with appropriate experience in NGS analysis may be considered.
Physical Capabilities: Job performance requires long periods of sitting at a computer. Must possess adequate vision and manual dexterity for computer work. Must have the ability to communicate verbally.
Supervisory Controls: The incumbent will be under the supervision of senior personnel at MHRP.
Work Environment: General office environment.
Other: Work is performed entirely in support of a Federal sponsored Cooperative Agreement and therefore is dependent solely on the ability of the Federal Government to fund the agreement. Position will terminate in the absence or withdrawal of Federal funds.
Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
