Postdoctoral studies Targeting the Ubiquitin-Proteasome System with Small Molecules (scholarship) – Stockholm, Sweden

Division

The Dantuma lab at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden has a long-standing interest in the role of protein degradation as therapeutic target in cancer. The goal of this academic drug development project is to target the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy in cancer with small molecules. Do you want to join us on this challenging journey? We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher with an interest in deciphering the mode of action of novel compounds that inhibit the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy. The project will be conducted in the group of Nico Dantuma.

Your mission

We have recently identified two novel compounds that inhibit the ubiquitin-proteasome system. More information can be found in two recent publications (Giovannucci et al, 2021; Cell Death Dis. 12: 914 and Giovannucci et al; Autophagy, in press). The mission of this project is to gain insight in the mode of action by which these molecules inhibit the ubiquitin-proteasome system and/or autophagy. The project will involve biochemical and cell biology methods to characterize cellular effects of these compounds and identify their molecular targets.

Entry requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled scientist with experience in drug development and/or the ubiquitin-proteasome system or autophagy. Advanced skills in molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry are important assets for this project. A background in chemistry and/or bioinformatic analysis can also be advantageous. Other helpful skills are experience with the cell-based assays and fluorescence microscopy. Good knowledge of both spoken and written English is a requirement.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna, Stockholm

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

What do we offer?

The Dantuma lab offers an inspiring environment for your research. Our research is driven by curiosity and focuses on different aspects of human proteases in cancer and neurodegeneration. The group is located in the new Biomedicum building housing over 1000 researchers belonging to five departments of the Karolinska Institutet and state-of-the-art core facilities.
