Presentation of the Data Science Department
A new scientific organization at IMT Atlantique has led to the creation of a Data Science department, whose research activities are organized around two broad areas:
- Data Science Theoretical Foundations which draw from traditional disciplines such as machine learning, statistics, optimization, signal and image processing, complexity, and computer aided decision. The scope includes the fundamental theory, techniques, methods, and algorithms underlying data science applications in various domains.
- Data Science Systems and Applications in different areas (see below).
This research is currently carried out within two laboratories that bring together IMT Atlantique, research organizations and various higher education establishments. More specifically, in the field of data science, these two laboratories are interested in:
- Data science for medical information processing within the LaTIM[1]. A number of flagship projects are developed including FollowKnee aimed at building a digital system for augmented surgery of the knee and the improved post-operative follow-up with a budget of €24M for five years https://followknee.com/ and AI-4-Child on MRI brain image analysis based on statistical learning to improve healthcare of children with cerebral palsy https://www.imt-atlantique.fr/fr/recherche-innovation/collaborer/chaires/ai-4-child a joint program with Philips company.
- Information and communication technologies for the fields of environment, sea, defense, industry 4.0 and health for the Lab-STICC[2] with outstanding projects including ValaDoE Value Added to the Energy Data https://www.imt-atlantique.fr/en/research-innovation/collaborate/chaires/valadoe on transforming data into information for decision making within the context of the energy transition, and DESEASION for collaborative maritime decision support and assessment http://recherche.imt-atlantique.fr/deseasion/#architecture.
Research work is developed in close partnership with industry[3].
In terms of teaching, the department is involved in the following areas:
- Fundamentals of mathematics, signal and image processing, computer science
- Theory and tools for data science, learning and decision-making
- Specific aspects of application fields
This new department is involved in all the training courses offered by the School at PostGraduate level (MSc in Engineering, Physician-Engineer Training, Masters and Erasmus Mundus, Doctorate) https://www.imt-atlantique.fr/en/study.
In terms of technology transfer and innovation, the department is committed to ensuring that the results of its research have an impact on industry and the economy, in the form of direct partnerships with leading companies or the creation of spin-off companies via the Made in IMT Atlantique incubator https://www.imt-atlantique.fr/fr/entreprises/incubateur. 240 start-up and spin-off companies have been supported since 1998 within this incubator including IMASCAP, now part of Stryker https://www.shoulderblueprint.com and OSO-AI https://www.oso-ai.com in the area of data science for healthcare.
