The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the department Safety in the Food Chain of the BfR is in the unit “Product Identity, Supply Chains and Traceability” from immediately temporary to fill the following position for two years:

Scientific officer in the National Reference Laboratory for Food Additives and Flavourings (f/m/x)

Reference number: 3289 | Salary group 13 TVöD | Place of work: Berlin | Application period: 21.06.2023

Part-time employment is possible. The time limit is set on the basis of the Act on Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

Tasks:

  • Scientific support in setting up the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Food Additives and Flavourings according to Article 100 of Regulation (EU) 2017/625 (concerns implementation in an existing laboratory information and management system, integration in the BfR quality management system, etc. )
  • Development, optimisation and validation of analysis methods for the determination of food additives and flavourings as well as implementation of interlaboratory tests
  • Expansion of scientific expertise in the field of food additives and flavourings
  • Independent initiation and coordination of research activities in the field of food additives and flavours
  • Presentation of results at specialist and international conferences
  • Literature research and publication of scientific results, writing of technical statements and reports

Requirements:

  • Completed university degree (master’s, diploma or similar university degree) in food chemistry or a similar scientific subject, doctorate desired
  • Very good knowledge in the field of general food analysis and analytical chemistry is required
  • The ability to perform independent scientific work is a prerequisite
  • Ability of acquiring external funding (grants, research projects) is an advantage
  • Proven experience in presenting and publishing scientific results is required
  • Experience in working in accredited laboratories and validation of analytical methods is desirable
  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written German and English is required
  • Very good IT skills as well as a conscientious approach to work, commitment, flexibility, ability to work in a team and resilience, as well as willingness to travel on business, are all required
