Modern Languages – Faculty Position

Algoma University (www.algomau.ca) has a special mission to be a teaching-oriented university that provides programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and professional programs, primarily at the undergraduate level. We have a particular focus on the needs of Northern Ontario, and a special mission to cultivate cross-cultural learning between Indigenous communities and other communities, in keeping with the history of Algoma University and its geographic site. With campuses in Sault Ste. In cooperation and partnership with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (www.shingwauku.ca), Algoma University offers the Anishinaabe Studies 3-year B.A. program and the 3-year BA in Anishinaabemowin. A summer immersion program in Anishinaabemowin runs annually. Algoma University, in partnership with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Anishinaabe Studies, in the Department of Modern Languages at the Sault Ste. Marie campus, beginning July 1, 2021 or as negotiated.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (or to have progressed to the point where completion of the Ph.D. is imminent) or the equivalent combination of academic and demonstrable community-recognized Anishinaabe knowledge awareness. A specialization in Anishinaabe cultural knowledge, research, and land-based teachings with emphasis on the communities of the Baawaating region will be considered assets.

Applicants will demonstrate a record of, or clear potential for, excellent research, teaching, curriculum development, publication or equivalent Anishinaabe cultural knowledge based experience. Applicants will demonstrate a history of success in culture-based education and ethical engagement from within, or in respectful collaboration with, Anishinaabe communities, organizations, and/or institutions. A strong awareness of cultural protocols, experience in curriculum development for culture-based education, demonstrated land- and/or water-based cultural knowledge, familiarity in speaking or recognizing Anishinaabe language will also be considered assets for this position.

Candidates should submit electronically: a letter of application; a CV; a statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., examples of peer teaching review and/or student evaluations); a research plan (up to two pages) and copies of up to three significant publications or other scholarly activity relevant to the topics outlined above; and the names, contact information and relationship of five referees (one of whom should be the most recent immediate supervisor).
