The Department of Human Genetics of McGill University seeks an outstanding scientist for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The professorial rank of the candidate will be determined according to their qualifications and experience.
The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent research program that articulates with and supports a high-profile Canadian Excellence Research Chair (CERC) research initiative entitled “Genomic medicine: from genes to drug targets for next-generation therapies”. They will be a core member of the McGill Genome Centre, a major research facility on the main McGill University campus. The candidate will benefit from the Centre’s highly collaborative research environment, state-of-the art molecular platforms, and high-performance computing facilities. McGill University is Canada’s most international university and it is centrally located in the vibrant, multicultural city of Montreal.
The CERC initiative, led by Professor Vincent Mooser at the McGill Genome Centre, uses a combination of large-scale molecular genetic studies, quantitative analyses, and clinical investigations across a broad range of disease areas to accelerate the discovery, development, and success of new therapies and diagnostic markers. A central element in the exploitation of the results will be the implementation of genome-editing methodologies for functional screens of human genetic variation, disease modelling, and therapeutic applications.
Job Duties:
The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized, innovative research program in genome editing applied to finding new therapeutics by:
1. Developing and implementing scalable methodologies for functional genomic screens of the impact of disease-related genetic variants in relevant disease models;
2. Applying these methods to specific classes of genes prioritized in the CERC program for the discovery and evaluation of potential drug targets;
3. Collaborating with other groups at McGill, nationally and globally to further develop and apply novel technologies for systematic functional genomic studies;
4. Contributing to teaching both in the classroom any by assuring an inclusive, supportive training environment that will attract top graduate students from around the world.
All McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University and the wider scholarly community. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute the scientific environment of the McGill Genome Centre and will be required to participate in classroom instruction and graduate student supervision within the guidelines of the Department of Human Genetics. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all areas is expected, including integration of EDI considerations into research design and practices, and creating equitable and inclusive research environments.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Candidates must possess a PhD or MD/PhD with training and research experience in a relevant field. Applicants should have strong expertise in genome editing methodologies, including base-editing, and demonstrated experience in application of such approaches to understand the genetic basis of health and disease from a functional genomics viewpoint.
Candidates also will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute to building a research team, and to establishing teaching and supervision environments committed to the recruitment, support, and inclusion of students and trainees with diverse lived experiences.
