The department of wind energy has a 2-year post-doctoral position opening in the area of Probabilistic Design with a focus on design loads in structural and mechanical components.
This position requires the candidate to quantify the reliability of wind turbine structures and components based on measurements, load simulations as well as scientifically evaluate the impact of uncertainties in the design process. There is the need to develop stochastic models of the wind conditions including wind turbulence, shear, wake effects and quantify the uncertainties in these models. The effects of load model uncertainties will be flowed down through all stages of aeroelastic processing that is common in load simulation codes. The effects of including uncertainties of modelling of blade aerodynamics and aeroelastic interactions, damping and stiffness properties of the different wind turbine structures on the design loads will be quantified using applicable limit states.
The candidate will need to work as a part of an externally funded project in a team that includes major wind energy industries and universities.
Qualifications
A PhD in Wind Energy or similar discipline is required. Applicants should have excellent analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. A good knowledge of at least one mechanical design software package is expected. A strong computational mechanics background is required along with a background in one or more of the following disciplines:
- Structural mechanics
- Wind turbine loads prediction
- Probability and statistics
- Structural Reliability
Further strong communication and presentation skills are required to effectively communicate research findings, as well as a good knowledge of technical English writing.
