NOSTER & Science Microbiome Prize

No one walks alone. Each human being is enveloped and contains billions of microorganisms. Research over the past decade has revealed the essential nature of relationships with these other organisms for healthy development and adult life. Research on the microbiome has flourished thanks to technological advances in genomics and bioinformatics. Already, many surprising discoveries have been made about the fundamental role of the microbiota in inflammation, cancer, obesity and many other chronic noncommunicable diseases that beset humans.

The  NOSTER Science Microbiome Prize  was created to reward the innovative research of young researchers working on the functional attributes of the microbiota of any organism capable of contributing to our understanding of health and human or veterinary diseases or of guiding therapeutic interventions.

The grand prize winner receives:

Each grand prize winner will receive a cash prize in the amount of  US $ 25,000 as well as  travel and accommodation expenses for the award ceremony.

The grand prize winner will also receive a free five (5) year digital subscription to  Science  and will have their winning essay published in  Science  (print and online).

Eligibility

For 2019, participants must be under the age of thirty-five (35) years, must hold a doctorate in medicine, a doctorate or a doctorate in medicine at the time of their registration and have obtained their diploma in the last 10 years. 

The applicant must have carried out or directed all the work and these must have been carried out during the last three years.

Submission

The price will be judged on the basis of a 1,000-word essay and supporting documents. The essay must describe the innovative research carried out by the applicant which reveals exciting new functions of the microbiota which may contribute to our understanding of human or veterinary and animal health or guide therapeutic interventions.

Entry procedures

The participant must submit the following:

  • A  completed registration form : https://noster.secure-platform.com/a/solicitations/home/22
  • An essay, written by the participant, which describes his research and puts it into perspective in relation to current research in the field of microbiome research. The essay should not exceed 1000 words. The applicant must have carried out or directed all the work and these must have been carried out during the last three years.
  • A one-page letter of recommendation from their postdoctoral adviser, supervisor or other experienced colleague who is familiar with the candidate’s work.
  • A Curriculum Vitae which includes the following:
    1. Full quotes from articles the participant has published on the research described in the essay
    2. Academic and professional awards and distinctions that the participant has received; and
    3. Relevant professional experience
  • Copies of two of the participant’s articles most relevant to the essay.
