Assistant Professor in the area of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences. The expected start date will be in the academic year 2020-2021 with the specific date to be mutually agreed between the School and the successful candidate.

The Division of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences seeks an exceptional scholar in health promotion with a PhD in a social or health science by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, and with expertise in public health. Candidates must have an excellent record of research that advances and applies the social and behavioural sciences in the field of health promotion as well as evidence of excellence in teaching related to public health science. In their research, candidates must use a ‘critical’ approach to examine how individual, organizational, social, institutional, political, economic and /or environmental factors and underlying assumptions influence health, health equity and the fields of health promotion and public health.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests expand our existing strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program in public health. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach courses in health promotion and quantitative research methods; and supervise graduate students in our MPH and PhD programs.

Candidates need to demonstrate the ability to influence policy and practice through the production of scholarship and the effective translation of knowledge. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of the ability to obtain grant funding is required. Priority will be given to those who demonstrate outstanding ability to make significant contributions to research, teaching, and leadership in social science and health at the local, national, and international levels.

Candidates must also provide evidence of excellence in teaching as shown through teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, teaching dossier, letters of reference and awards. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials. The most prominent School of Public Health in Canada, the DLSPH now has a roster of over 1000 students. It houses the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, the Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health, and the Joint Centre for Bioethics.

The mission of the division of Social and Behavioural Sciences is to advance and apply the social and behavioural sciences in the field of public health through the advancement of knowledge on the structures and processes that underlie health and health promotion, illness, premature mortality, injury and disability. We offer a doctoral program in Social and Behavioural Sciences and a professional Master of Public Health in Health Promotion program.

In their cover letter, applicants are asked to specifically comment on: 1) how they apply theories of inequality (e.g., de-colonial, critical race, feminist) in their scholarship, methodological approach and/or teaching; 2) how they practice diversity and equity as a health promotion researcher and educator; 3) their ability to teach quantitative research methods at the graduate level; and 4) which existing courses they have experience to teach and what new courses they would develop if hired.
