Assistant Professor in Anthropology  (50% without tenure-track)

Contract limited to 4 years, non renewable from 1.08. 2020 to 31.07. 2024.

Job description

The successful candidate will take the scientific and administrative co-responsibility of the Bachelor in biology-ethnology, which is based on a close collaboration between the Institute of anthropology and the Faculty of sciences.  He or she will teach and conduct high level international research in the field of anthropology of agri-food systems, anthropology of food and anthropology of environmental governance with a specific focus on Switzerland.

Terms of reference

  • Research:  the professor will conduct research at international level in the field of anthropology of agro-food systems and environmental governance; he or she is expected to develop and coordinate a research team on these topics.
  • Teaching:  the professor will teach 2 hours per week during the entire academic year: one hour at Bachelor level within the BA in biology-ethnology, and the other at Master level, within the interdisciplinary Master in social sciences.   •  The candidate will supervise both Master and PhD theses.
  •  Administration: the professor will hold the scientific and administrative responsibility of the Bachelor in Ethnology and Biology.  He or she will also participate in other administrative tasks within the Institute of anthropology and the Faculty.

Requirements

  • PhD in anthropolology or ethnology
  • High level expertise in the anthropology of agro-food systems and farmer worlds with an excellent knowledge of the Swiss context and fieldwork experience in Switzerland.
  • High level publications, including books, edited books and peer-reviewed articles in international journals.
  •  Teaching experience in the fields of anthropology of agro-food systems, anthropology of environmental problems and anthropology of food.
  • Experience in obtaining and managing research funds and in coordinating research projects

Non-French speakers are expected to teach in French after a two-year period.

Affiliation:  The successful candidate will be based in the Institute of Anthropology.

Dotation:  The position comes with a 50% doctoral assistant. The professor will also benefit from the services of the secretariat of the Institute of anthropology and of the libraries of the University.
