University Teacher in Inorganic Materials Chemistry

The vacancy is placed in the Department of Chemistry and will be filled from 1 August 2020 (by agreement).

The working duties of the University Teacher of inorganic materials chemistry includes supervision of laboratory work on all levels of undergraduate education in natural science and technology. This comprises also lecturing especially on the boundary areas between materials technology, mechanical engineering and chemistry. In addition, supervision of research projects and theses as well as reviewing theses are included in the duties.

The University Teacher of inorganic materials chemistry also participates in organization and supervision of examinations, development of chemistry laboratory teaching, curriculum work, administrative duties and tutoring. An integral part of the duties comprises carrying out independent research on inorganic materials or structures aimed for technical applications, including the supervision and reviewing of doctoral thesis work. The research must be in line with the current topics of the Department of Chemistry. Independent research work requires to apply for external funding.

Admission to the position of University Teacher requires good knowledge of Finnish, a suitable university degree, good teaching skills and proof of independent research. The department also plays an important role in the training of chemistry teachers. For that reason, knowledge of Finnish language will consider as a merit.

When assessing the merits of the applicants for the post, expertise in the field, teaching experience and pedagogical education, ability to produce study materials, other teaching merits and demonstration lecture shall take into account. In the evaluation process of the applicants, the following issues will consider as advantageous: doctoral degree, good knowledge of the most important synthesis and characterization methods for inorganic materials or structures, ability to act actively as part of a research group and experience on using and developing modern teaching methods. The applicant must be well acquainted with the development of new functional inorganic materials or structures as well as have the ability to acquire external funding. Fluency in English is required.

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel job demands assessment levels 4–6 where the job-specific salary component is between 2535,20–3423,25 €/month. The component based on personal performance adds a minimum of 6 % and maximum of 50 % to this salary. The salary for the post is determined when drawing up the employment contract and will be between 2687,31 €–5134,88 €.

There will be a trial period of six months.

The Department of Chemistry will move to total new Aurum premises during the year 2021, providing a completely new and modern setting for teaching and laboratory work.
