University Professor (m/f/d) of Virology
Successor of Prof. Dr. Matthias Reddehase
(comparable to salary grade W3 LBesG)

We are looking for an internationally recognized researcher (medicine or natural science) who will represent the field of virology in research, teaching (including the training of young researchers and academic career development) as well as in diagnostics and medical findings. The successful candidate will also become the director of the Institute of Virology. The professor is expected to strengthen the immunological profile of the University Medical Center and to expand the area of clinical virology. In addition to outstanding academic qualifications and expertise in the field of diagnostics, applicants must possess a cooperative work attitude and leadership skills. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The professor is expected to get involved in core research areas of the University Medical Center as well as in existing CRCs and research networks. A contribution to the Mainz research focus in ageing research is desired. In this case, a joint appointment with the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is possible. We expect the professor to work closely with the Institute of Immunology and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. Excellent research achievements in the advertised field are required, evidenced through high impact publications and competitive third-party funding.

One of the tasks associated with the position is to strengthen the Medical Center’s profile in the field of diagnostics. This includes further medical training at the Institute of Virology, its involvement in the Zentrum der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Infektiologie (DGI-Zentrum Mainz), as well as the targeted accreditation of the institute and cooperation regarding the establishment of the Zentrum für in-vitro-Diagnostik (ZivD). Broad expertise in the field of diagnostics is required. Applicants with a background in medicine must be medical specialists for microbiology, virology, and infectious disease epidemiology.

We expect the professor to teach courses in the medicine, dentistry and pharmacy degree programs and to contribute to the development of innovative and interdisciplinary teaching formats and programs. Accordingly, demonstrable teaching competence as well as a habilitation or equivalent qualifications according to § 49 subsection 1 no. 4a of the Hochschulgesetz, are required.

All remaining conditions for employment are defined in § 49 of the German Higher Education Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

On principle, a private-law employment relationship with the University Medical Center is provided for. In the case of the successful applications of those who hold tenure for life as a civil servant, may continue to hold this position according to § 20 subsection 2 Universitätsmedizingesetz. The State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University Medical Center pursue a concept of intensive support for students and expect instructors to maintain a high presence.
