The program of scholarships start to career support completion of Warwick PhD students in the transition from their PhD and career of independent postdoctoral research. Applications are welcomed twice a year.
System objectives
The start Fellowship career is to help the PhD students to settle into a career academic. Fellows at the start of their career :
- Refine and maximize the academic results and impact of their doctoral research
- Develop scholarship and funding applications with the support and guidance of the IAS
- Develop their broader academic leadership skills by participating in the Accolade training program
- Establish new interdisciplinary connections and research directions
- Organize a research-related event to present themselves and their research to the wider academic community
Note that this is not a vehicle to fund new research or to carry out doctoral research. These activities are outside the scope of the ECF.
Funding
The award is 0.5 FTE ( this is -to- tell halftime) for six months initially with the possibility to extend it to 10 months demonstrated satisfactory progress and participation. The scholarship is not a salaried position, but provides a training allowance to support the scholarship holder’s participation in the Accolade program . The allowance is based on 50% of that of the current Research Council doctoral studentship, and amounts to £ 637 per month in the 20/21 academic year. In addition, the fellow can apply for up to £ 200 to support activities support for the development of his research career .
The scholarship holder will also have access to the facilities of the IAS and the university for the duration of the scholarship.
Eligibility
Applicants should only apply for the round (s) for which they are eligible. In 2020-2021, the two call deadlines are:
- 12 noon January 12, 2021: for candidates who will submit their thesis for examination between October 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021, scholarships starting in April 2021.
- Noon April 27, 2021: for candidates who will submit their thesis for examination between May 1 and September 30, 2021, scholarships starting in October 2021.

You must submit your thesis for review by the specified deadline and you must attend and actively participate in the Accolade program .
The extension of F ellowships to 10 months duration will be considered only if the doctoral examination is successfully completed ( c. -To- resulted in a recommendation to award with or without corrections).
You can not have any other job for more than 20 hours per week (0.5 FTE) during the duration of their scholarship.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have an appropriate visa if required , and that acceptance of the award does not conflict with the terms and conditions of an existing visa.
Review criteria
The applications will be reviewed by a panel of members Warwick academic staff, including the director of the IAS.
Academic excellence - taking into account:
- Previous publication file, if applicable, resulting from doctoral research
- Conference papers, if applicable, based on doctoral research
- Grants and scholarships awarded during postgraduate career
- Evidence of engagement with the research community beyond the immediate domain
- Reference letters
Quality of the proposed activities - as detailed in the project brief, taking into account:
- Intellectual ambition and scope of the proposed activities
- Ability of the proposed program to lead to the advancement of the candidate’s postdoctoral research career
- Evidence of continued proactivity and clarity of objectives to achieve research goals.
- Feasibility (ability to achieve stated objectives during the scholarship period).
- That it is not a vehicle to fund new research or to carry out doctoral research
Scope of interdisciplinary engagement - taking into account:
- Interdisciplinary management of the proposed work
- The candidate’s ability and willingness to situate his future research within the broader interdisciplinary research framework of the IAS.
Application Procedure
From the applicant – TWO documents, uploaded together
- A completed application form which includes:
- A project statement of 500 words maximum
- A statement of up to 250 words on how their research would benefit / contribute to the IAS
- Signatures of the head of department and of the candidate’s departmental administrator
- The candidate’s CV (the CV will not contain more than 2 plain and simple A4 sides)
Arbitrators – ONE document per arbitrator
- Reference letters which aim to address the candidate:
- Achievements: academic, as well as commitment, beyond immediate specialization
- Contributions to the department: teaching, seminars, event support
- Academic and support responsibilities
- Knowledge and involvement in interdisciplinary research
It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the application and academic references and reach the IAS before the deadline. The applications late or incomplete submitted will not be taken into account.
