Materials Science & Engineering – Assistant or Associate Professor

The Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University invites applications from outstanding scholars for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The preferred date for the beginning of the appointment is July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has a strong international reputation in both research and teaching and is one of the top Materials Departments in Canada. In addition to our international reputation for excellence in metallurgy, our faculty members are internationally recognized for their cutting-edge research activities in areas such as nanomaterials, biomaterials, solar cells, supercapacitors, batteries, computational materials science and advanced characterization.

Applicants will hold a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline, and must demonstrate a successful record of research, reflected in extramural grant acquisition and publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses. They will also be expected to establish a strong externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, and foster existing or new collaborations with other departments and faculties. Evidence of leadership skills, excellence in service, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures is also required.

The successful candidate should have expertise in the field of high-temperature process metallurgy, with emphasis on sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The successful candidate would build a research program that contributes to meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The candidate is expected to contribute to initiatives and research within the McMaster Steel Research Centre (MSRC) and collaborate with its member companies. The successful candidate will be provided the opportunity to apply for competitive funding for their steel-related research initiatives within the SRC.
