The Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC-HSC) is seeking applications to fill a 2-year contractually limited position as a Veterinary Specialist in the Avian and Exotic service.
Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario, and should be a diplomate of the American Association of Zoological Medicine or the European College of Zoological Medicine, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Avian, or Avian and Small Mammal), or eligible for that certification examination. ACZM board certification is preferred. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in clinical medicine with avian and exotic species plus outstanding teaching, communication, and client service skills. Service activities will include the medical management of patients and consultation with other services in the OVC-Health Sciences Centre with limited administrative activities. The service is also supported by one faculty member, 1 intern, and three clinical graduate students (DVSc).
The expectation is to provide medical management for our avian and exotic patients, grow caseload in the referral hospital, create an efficient operational model, plan for our future goals within the service, and provide clinical training for DVSc students. The Veterinarian will report to the Director/Chief Medical Officer of the OVC HSC. The successful candidate must be a team player who will work closely with the animal care staff in the Avian and Exotic Service ensuring the best care possible for our patients and deliver outstanding client service.
The successful candidate will be required to work occasional weekends and holidays, provide on-call duties and to respond to emergencies.
The OVC Health Sciences Centre at the University of Guelph offers medical and surgical care for small and large animals, while training future veterinarians in a challenging clinical environment. It is a major window to the community for OVC and the University of Guelph. Primarily a referral hospital, the HSC treats approximately 20,000 companion animal, equine, domestic farm animal and exotic species each year. Our field service also provides primary care for ruminant and swine clients on farms throughout the region. The health sciences centre is at the core of our college, providing learning opportunities as well as advancing the field of veterinary medicine through clinically-based research and clinical service. We provide experiential, small-group learning that epitomizes the goals of the University of Guelph.
