Veterinarian

Floating Doctors is based in Bocas del Toro province of Panama. We are seeking veterinarians, to join us for 6 months, 3 months or for a 3 week stay at our base. Positions available include Lead Veterinary Medical Provider, volunteer veterinarian, veterinary externs, or veterinary technician. Join medical doctors and work in parallel caring for a wide variety of animals including livestock, small animals and exotics.

This is a very unusual opportunity to spend time in Panama. You will have time off on weekends to travel, surf and scuba dive. During the week you will be working side by side with physicians providing veterinary care to animals that rarely get to see a veterinarian. You will get to see and treat tropical disease that you have only read about. Your help is essential in managing and preventing zoonotic diseases. You will be working in areas that have no electricity and limited access to running water. You will feel like you have stepped back in time. The people are so appreciative of your help and your work will truly save lifes and change the quality of their life and yours.

Floating Doctors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit medical team that has treated patients in Haiti, Honduras, and Panama. Floating Doctors deploys mobile clinics over a 7,000 square mile area of jungle-covered mountain and mangrove mazes, in the Bocas del Toro Province, in which we are often the only medical service available. Worms and other parasites, leishmaniasis,  machete wounds, malnutrition, dengue fever, STDs, HIV, poor pre-natal health, shark bites, infected sores, malaria, scabies, lightning strikes and fungal infections are among the many conditions encountered regularly. The absence of sanitation, electricity, clean water and other infrastructure combined with poverty and poor health knowledge compound every challenge to health care. Despite these challenges, to date over 60,000 patients have received care from our teams.

With challenges affecting health at every level, Floating Doctors utilizes a highly versatile approach to a dynamic health environment. Our programs address individual and community health—not only do we provide acute and ongoing medical care, but also include education, training, community projects, and preventive health interventions to create sustainable improvements in health. Our programs are continuously evaluated and adapted to ensure Floating Doctors focuses on the current key health issues identified in communities.
