The Northern Food Security Challenge is an agri-food innovation challenge where eligible Northern Ontario businesses are invited to submit an application focused on their innovative solutions, processes or methods used to improve food security in Northern communities. The 6 highest scoring applications will be selected to participate in a virtual pitch competition hosted in partnership with the Ingenuity, Lakehead University’s business incubator space.

A cash prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the winner and a $5,000 cash prize will be provided to the runner up.  Applications to the challenge will be judged on the problem or opportunity they are addressing, their solution’s ability to address the problem/opportunity, team experience and readiness to grow the business and the overall impact to agri-food security in the North.

Eligible applicants are headquartered in Northern Ontario, are a sole proprietorship or corporation, for-profit Canadian company with a minimum Technology Readiness Level of 4+ who operate in the agriculture or food & beverage sectors. This competition is designed for early-stage companies who are pre-revenue or have trailing 12 month revenues of less than $250,000 and have 5 or fewer FTE employees.

Les exigences de qualification

Un candidat retenu pour le poste de chercheur doctorant doit

• Détenir une maîtrise en informatique, en génie électrique, en génie biomédical, en neurosciences ou dans un domaine connexe.
• Une expérience antérieure et des publications sur la vision par ordinateur, l'analyse d'images médicales, la conception d'algorithmes d'apprentissage automatique ou un domaine connexe seront un plus.
• Une bonne connaissance de l'anglais parlé et écrit est requise

Salaire

La durée des postes à durée déterminée est de 2 ans. Le début prévu des travaux est décembre 2023 ou dès que possible par la suite. Une période d'essai de 6 mois est appliquée pour le poste.

three Doctoral Researchers

to work on the research project “Towards reading retinal fundus images for real-world clinical applications” led by Academy Research Fellow Qing Liu, and the other two doctoral student positions to work on face analysis and multi-modal learning led by Academy Professor Guoying Zhao in the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis Research Unit (CMVS) to work on the development and implementation of algorithms for eye disease diagnosis with fundus images, face privacy protection or multi-modal learning.

About CMVS

CMVS provides an inspiring and international research environment. CMVS is renowned world-wide for its scientific breakthroughs in machine vision and signal analysis. Many of its results, including the Local Binary Pattern, face analysis and geometric camera calibration methodologies, are highly cited and have been adopted for different types of problems and applications around the world. The unit is internationally attractive, with one visiting FiDiPro Professor and one Fellow, several visiting scholars and an extensive international collaboration network, enabling a large number of joint publications in leading forums.

The main research interests of CMVS are in computer vision and machine learning, affective computing, multimodal image and signal analysis, low-energy computing, and applications in affective human-computer interaction, biometrics, augmented reality, and biomedicine. In physiological signal analysis basic, applied and translational research in biomedical engineering is carried out to tackle key challenges of next generation personalized medicine and wellness solutions. In its field the Research Unit is globally highly ranked with research activities based on international collaborations. The partners of CMVS include three institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Computing Technology, Psychology, and Automation), National University of Singapore, Stanford University (USA), University of Georgia (USA), Imperial College London, Czech Technical University (Prague), University of Maryland (USA), Idiap Research Institute (Switzerland), and EPFL (Switzerland). At the University of Oulu the Research Unit and its leading experts are responsible for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral education in the field.

Open positions for a doctoral researcher

As a doctoral researcher, you will study the courses related to the subject field, collaborate with other team members working on the same project or same subject and write research papers and technical reports. You will analyze the experimental results, find out the problems and adjust to new solutions.

For the first position, you would work in the field of medical image analysis and machine learning, carrying out also the following tasks:

Qualification requirements

A successful candidate for the doctoral researcher position must

• Hold a Master`s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related area.
• Previous experience and publications on computer vision, medical image analysis, machine learning algorithm design, or a related area will be a plus.
• Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required
• Strong mathematical and programming skills with C/C++/Matlab/python are respected.

Salary

The salary will be in accordance with the Finnish universities' salary system (for teaching and research personnel): level 02-04. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600€ per month.

L'Institut de physique (IOP) de l'Académie chinoise des sciences (CAS) recherche des candidats pour sa bourse internationale pour jeunes scientifiques (IYSF). L'IOP est un institut de recherche multidisciplinaire axé sur la physique fondamentale et appliquée avec une histoire de plus de 90 ans. Ses activités de recherche actuelles se concentrent sur la physique de la matière condensée, la physique optique, la physique atomique/moléculaire, la physique des plasmas, la matière molle/biophysique et la physique computationnelle. Le programme vise à recruter et à soutenir de jeunes chercheurs exceptionnels aux perspectives exceptionnelles et à encourager des collaborations ambitieuses entre l'IOP et le monde universitaire international. Le poste de boursier est d'une durée d'un an et renouvelable jusqu'à trois ans.

Exigences

(1) Doctorat d'une université hors de Chine continentale au cours des cinq dernières années / Doctorat d'une université de Chine continentale et au moins un an d'expérience de recherche à l'étranger au cours des cinq dernières années.

(2) Excellents résultats scolaires avec certaines réalisations.

(3) Un bon joueur d'équipe avec un fort esprit de coopération.

Salaire et avantages

(1) Le salaire annuel est de 350 000 RMB (~ 50 710 $).

Award details

These Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from least developed countries and fragile States in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

Purpose: To contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. These awards will also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration.

Intended beneficiaries: High-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth PhD Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

These scholarships are offered under six CSC Development themes.

As part of a partnership agreement between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and King's College London, scholars who are funded on this scholarship receive support towards their tuition fees from King's.

Eligibility criteria

Les participants vont :

• Présenter leurs propositions de recherche sur les causes sous-jacentes des conflits émergents, en explorant les approches axées sur les jeunes pour la résolution des conflits, le rôle des jeunes dans la consolidation de la paix, les stratégies féministes de consolidation de la paix et la relation complexe entre le développement socio-économique et la résolution des conflits

• Bénéficier de sessions de renforcement des capacités pour améliorer leurs compétences en recherche et en communication

• Accéder à des opportunités de publication rémunérées : les auteurs des notes conceptuelles sélectionnées seront invités à convertir leurs propositions en notes d'orientation

Où et quand?

• Cet événement est prévu à Madrid (Espagne) dans le cadre de la conférence annuelle d'EuroMeSCo sur « Du partenariat euro-méditerranéen à une alliance géostratégique euro-méditerranéenne » . En plus de participer aux sessions du VI Forum Euromed des Jeunes Chercheurs, les participants auront également l'opportunité de partager leurs expériences et d'apprendre d'autres experts et praticiens participant aux panels de la Conférence Annuelle EuroMeSCo le 10 octobre .
• Le Forum Euromed Jeunes Chercheurs durera 1 journée complète le 9 octobre  et les participants devraient se rendre à Madrid le 8 octobre et repartir le 10 octobre dans l'après-midi.

Are you interested in exploring youth approaches to conflict resolution in the Euro-Mediterranean region?

During this year’s Forum, 30 participants from across the Mediterranean and its neighbouring regions will meet in October, in Madrid, Spain, to exchange with policy-makers, practitioners and other young experts on key issues in the Euro-Mediterranean area and contribute to policy shaping in the region.

This year´s edition of the Forum will be about: Bridging Divides: Exploring Youth Approaches to Conflict Resolution in the Changing Euro-Mediterranean Region

WHO CAN APPLY?

 The candidates shall:

• be researchers or students between 18 and 35 years of age who have attained at least a bachelor’s degree;
• be affiliated to a research centre, a university or organisation based in one of the 43 UfM countries (priority will be given to researchers affiliated to EuroMeSCo member organisations);
• demonstrate interest in the Forum’s themes;
• demonstrated academic and/or professional background with regards to the Forum’s theme is desirable.

Participants will:

• Present their research proposals on the underlying causes of emerging conflicts, exploring youth-driven approaches to conflict resolution, the role of young people in peacebuilding, feminist peacebuilding strategies, and the intricate relationship between socio-economic development and conflict resolution

• Benefit from capacity building sessions to improve their research and communications skills

• Access remunerated publishing opportunities: authors of selected Concept Notes will be asked to convert their proposals into Policy Briefs

Where and when?

• This event is scheduled to take place in Madrid (Spain) in the framework of the EuroMeSCo Annual Conference on “From the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership to a Euro-Mediterranean Geostrategic Alliance”. In addition to participating in the sessions of the VI Euromed Young Researchers Forum, participants will also have the opportunity to share experiences and learn from other experts and practitioners taking part in the panel sessions of the EuroMeSCo Annual Conference on 10 October.
• The Euromed Young Researchers Forum will last 1 full day on 9 October and participants are expected to travel to Madrid on 8 October and depart on 10 October in the afternoon.
