Skills requirements:

  • Education: PhD or equivalent in mathematics or a closely related field.

Position Description

The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor (Teaching and Research) or with tenure Associate Professor (Teaching and Research) position in Early Learning Education.

The appointments will commence July 1, 2024, or at a mutually agreeable date.

We are seeking a scholar who will establish an active research program and demonstrate leadership in Early Learning Education. Applicants must have a strong disciplinary knowledge with an understanding of developmentally appropriate pedagogies that are responsive to diverse learning paths. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on how education is situated within and responsive to complex classrooms given the multifaceted worlds in which we live, learn and play.

The successful candidate will bring additional knowledge and solutions to transform pedagogies in the contemporary early learning landscape. The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in early literacy as a core component of early learning programming. Their research program may involve conducting research on 1) early literacy; 2) play-based learning; 3) social-emotional development of early learners; 4) English language learning in early childhood; and/or 5) current and future complexities of childhood (digital, physical, etc.) and the early learning classroom.

In addition to maintaining an active funded research program, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students, teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their areas of specialization and demonstrate leadership in service, collaboration, and mentorship within the University and the community.  As well, the successful candidate will be expected to engage actively with K-12 communities.

The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high quality journals, securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the university level.

The successful candidate at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a strong track record of publications in high quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching at the university level, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.

The position provides an opportunity to establish a vigorous, sustainable, externally funded research program in the area of early learning education, contribute to teaching and student supervision, and participate in leadership of related research, education, and service. The Department of Psychology, in the Faculty of Health at York University, invites highly qualified applicants for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) at the rank of Assistant/Associate position in Computational Neuroscience. This is a tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2024.

This is a Canada Research Chair Tier 2 appointment. The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., within 10 years of attaining their highest degree at the time of nomination, with consideration for career breaks) who have the acknowledged potential to lead their field of research. Appointment to a Tier 2 Chair is for five years, is renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support from the program. Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, including maternity leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful candidate will engage with, and benefit from, the VISTA program, which focuses on the intersection between biological and computational vision research. The VISTA program is supported by a total of $120 million in funding over seven years. The successful candidate will be eligible for enhanced start-up funds from VISTA. A key faculty resource includes access to a state-of-the-art MRI facility dedicated to research.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join unique interdisciplinary Organized Research Units (ORUs) at York, including the Centre for Vision Research, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Society, and the new Centre for Integrative and Applied Neuroscience.  The successful applicant can also elect to become a member of the Connected Minds program, which focuses on scholarship in three main themes: I. Co-creating Research for Societal Needs and Predicted Impact; II. Fundamentals of Social Interaction: Neural, Algorithmic, and Social Networks; and III. Designing and Developing Socially Responsible Technologies. The successful applicant can also elect to be considered for appointment to the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence as a Vector Faculty Affiliate or Faculty Member.  Located in Toronto, The Vector Institute is home to over 700 active researchers with broad expertise in AI.

Candidate Qualifications:

Degree: PhD in Psychology, Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience or related field is required. We welcome applicants with expertise in developing and applying innovative computational methodologies (e.g., big data analytics, supervised and unsupervised deep models, reinforcement learning, dynamical systems, Bayesian models, information theoretic approaches) to diverse forms of visual neuroscience data (e.g., behavioural, fMRI, EEG, single-unit or multi-unit recordings). Post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred.

Scholarship:

  • A coherent and well-articulated program of research and specialization in computational neuroscience with application to visual perception, broadly defined.
  • A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research. For Associate Professor level, record of external grants is required.
  • A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field (e.g., publications in top-tier journals, invited presentations, patents). 

Teaching:

  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students. Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through a teaching statement that articulates teaching philosophy and documents teaching and supervisory accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including curricular development, teaching evaluations, supervision of research students and letters of reference).
  • Ability to teach graduate-level classes in computational methods for statistical modeling, computational/theoretical neuroscience, and undergraduate level classes in statistics & research methods for psychology students.
  • Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
  • For Associate Professor level, a record of graduate student supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching experience, is required.

Job description

The Department of Biological Sciences invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant in Plant molecular biology.

The Department of Biological Sciences is an important player in society. It trains qualified scientists and responsible citizens, contributes to the advancement of knowledge through its cutting-edge research, and supervises student researchers in a cross-disciplinary context, in order to apprehend and understand all facets of life - animal, plant and microbial - from the molecule to the ecosystem, and to promote a sustainable environment for future generations.

The appointed candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, be active in research, publishing, and the transmission of knowledge, and contribute to the activities of the University.

Requirements:

  • PhD in biological sciences or related discipline;

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Science at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to start no earlier than July 1, 2024. The successful candidate must have a PhD in geography, environmental management, sustainability, planning or a related discipline. Evidence of an actively developing research trajectory in human dimensions of climate change, with an emphasis on one or more areas of climate adaptation or low carbon transitions is required.  Duties include research, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, and supervising graduate students.  The ability to develop and teach an array of in-person and on-line courses is required, and teaching capacity in the area of climate change communications would be a major asset.

The starting salary range for this position at the Assistant Professor rank is $90,000 to $110,000. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

The Position

Applicants must have an entry -to- practice degree (BScN or MN) in nursing, as well as a PhD in nursing or a related discipline. All applicants must be eligible for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Candidates must also have a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates with a strong program of research in the field of perinatal nursing with a focus on complex interventions and outcomes-oriented research.

Candidates must also have experience working with, teaching, or mentoring/supervising diverse groups or diverse students along with the ability to contribute to fostering diversity on campus, and within the curriculum or nursing profession, demonstrated through the application materials. Resources from this Chair, which is supported by a $3 million endowment, will support the integration of research, education and clinical work to advance perinatal nursing research.  A strong track record as a clinical nurse scholar, including publications in leading journals and as an externally- funded investigator with a focus on perinatal nursing research, and in particular, complex interventions and outcomes-oriented, is essential.

Evidence of excellence in research will be evidenced by field-relevant publications considered of international quality, award of substantial competitive funding, the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Applicants whose research involves significant clinical or practice engagement are strongly encouraged. An ability to initiate collaborations and work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams is highly desirable.

The Heather M. Reisman Chair will be an embedded scholar within the Science of Care Institute and Centre for Nursing Excellence in partnership with the Women’s and Infant’s Health Program (WIH) at Sinai Health. The Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Alberta is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in modern or contemporary Korean Studies in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Responsibilities: Maintain an ambitious schedule of research publication in venues appropriate to the candidate's discipline.

  • Teach four class sections of Korean studies per academic year, in person on our Edmonton campus. Classes will be a mix of introductory survey courses and advanced courses in the candidate's field of specialization. The successful candidate will be expected to teach one course per year on some aspect of Korea-Canada relations broadly understood, in a fashion appropriate to their field of specialization.
  • Make yearly service contributions to the Department of East Asian Studies, to the University of Alberta, and to the scholarly profession at a rate appropriate to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a topic focused on some aspect of modern or contemporary Korea, in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts.

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Korean and English
  • Minimum of three years' experience in Canadian or Anglophone universities, either as a student, researcher, or instructor.

The Department: The Department of East Asian Studies was founded in 1982, and is one of the few departments of its kind in Canada that offers full four years in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, along with courses in the histories, cultures, and societies of East Asia. Our diverse faculty includes scholars working in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts, and we are the only area studies department at any university in the province of Alberta. We have an award-winning Korean language program, as well as one Associate Professor specializing in premodern Korean literature.
