The Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2024 or as negotiated. We seek candidates who will develop an innovative research program investigating bacterial and/or archaeal adaptation to the environment and their roles in ecosystems using modern microbiological, genetic, and/or biochemical techniques. We will also consider outstanding applications from other environmental microbiology fields that fit within our Department’s academic plans.

We welcome applications from candidates who can build research collaborations within and outside of the Department. Research in the Department of Biology ranges from molecular biology to ecosystems, using computational, lab and field-based approaches. Candidates whose research complements existing expertise or develops a new area of research with value to the Department are desired.

The candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program in environmental microbiology. Opportunities for funding exist through the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, as well as national opportunities available through CIHR, NSERC, MITACS, CFI and other federal funding sources.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have postdoctoral experience. A proven track record in publishing significant research findings in environmental microbiology is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a record of, or potential for, excellence in teaching microbiology, or related disciplines, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should submit a single PDF containing all application materials. Please include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, copies of three of your most significant publications (each with a 300-word-maximum explanation of your contribution to the work and why it is significant), and names and contact information for three referees willing to provide letters of reference. Send applications by email to: Dr. Dion Durnford, Chair c/o Jenna Meade at jenn.meade@unb.ca indicating «Microbiologist» in the subject line.

Applicants should indicate their current citizenship status. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The deadline for applications is November 3, 2023.

Short-listed candidates will be required to provide satisfactory proof of credentials including appropriately certified translations of credentials into English, as applicable.
