Position Summary

This one year position assists with the development and implementation of all TRIO Upward Bound program activities and services for low-income and potential first-generation college-bound high school students. This position: provides direct academic counseling services to Upward Bound students throughout the four years of high school; provides daily case management, advocacy, and social/academic support for participants; plans and facilitates college preparation workshops and classes; provides transportation and oversight of high school students in a variety of settings; and, maintains detailed and accurate records of program activities. This position requires working closely with high school students and families, as well as staff from high school and post-secondary institutions.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides daily and intensive case management and support for all UB participants.
  • Assists UB participants with all aspects of the college preparation, search, and application process.
  • Co-leads summer programming in the UB Summer Academy at NNMC
  • Develops student support plans, materials, and other interventions.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements educational workshops, college preparation classes, college visits, cultural/social enrichment activities, field trips, and other program events for students and families.
  • Provides regular support, counsel, and advocacy for program participants.
  • Provides transportation and supervision of high school students in a variety of activities, including afterschool, weekends, and overnight trips.
  • Maintains confidential student records and assists with data collection and entry for required grant reports.
  • Works closely with high school staff and parents, and postsecondary education administrators and staff, and other community partners.
  • Maintains a working knowledge and expertise regarding college admission requirements, academic programs, and financial aid programs.
  • Assists with ongoing outreach and recruitment of high school students and helps represent the program at school and community events.

  • Participates in all program planning, identifies need for changes and recommends improvements in the program, and works closely with all other program staff.
  • Participates in professional development including involvement with ROCA NM, the Davis NM Scholarship, regional and national TRIO-related association events, and NACAC/RMACAC.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in any field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years or more experience working with low-income high school students and potential first-generation college students.
  • Experience with TRIO or similar college access programs.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of FERPA and other privacy/confidentiality regulations.
  • Knowledge of high school curriculum and college admissions, including financial aid.
  • Knowledge of best practices in youth development and college access advising.
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs, including google docs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to provide quality customer services.
  • Ability to drive NNMC vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping.  The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
  • The work is typically performed in a variety of settings including an office and multiple classrooms.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is normally performed in a typical office environment.
