The School of Global Health in the Faculty of Health at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Experiential Education in Global Health. This is a teaching-centered, tenure-track appointment to commence July 1, 2024.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses and to provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and at the program level. The successful candidate will also be expected to lead the practicum course and will take a leadership role in the coordination of the undergraduate program in the first instance.

The successful candidate would be expected to lead and teach core courses for the Specialized Honours degree: such as Global Health Practicum (GH 4300), Applied Global Health Research Capstone (GH 4400), Agents of Change in a Global World (IHST 1020), and Foundations of Global Health (GH 1010). The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in pedagogical innovation in areas, such as experiential education, community engagement, decolonizing approaches, and/or technology enhanced learning. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, student experience, and supporting curriculum development within the School.

Candidate Qualifications:

Degree: PhD or PhD equivalent (e.g., MD) from the health sciences, social sciences, or humanities and a record of academic experience in a global health-related field is required.

Teaching:

  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching at the university level and dedication to students (e.g., teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and/or peer evaluations).
  • A record or evident promise of making valuable contributions through administrative and committee service.
  • A strong commitment to pedagogy and student success, the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to experiential education teaching, learning and program design, and evidence of good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be familiar with a range of pedagogical, philosophical, and disciplinary lenses relevant to global health and demonstrated expertise in, at least, one of the following: health advocacy, health education, health promotion, social determinants of health, global governance, and/or intersectional, anti-colonial, or anti-oppression frameworks
  • Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position may involve graduate teaching and supervision.

Additional: Experience working outside of academia in global health policy or practice would be an asset but is not required.
