The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) and the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences jointly seek qualified candidates to fill a position

Full Professorship (W3) for Sustainable Polymer Chemistry

according to the Berlin (or Jülich) model. Associated with the professorship at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is the management of the research area of sustainable (polymer)chemistry at the Helm- holtz Institute for Polymers in Energy Applications (HIPOLE) Jena, the office will be located in Jena. The professorship is associated with the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry (IOMC).

We are looking for an established personality (m/f/d) with profound knowledge and experience in the field of sustainable chemistry, in particular the sustainable synthesis of monomers and functional poly- mers that can be used for energy storage and conversion. The synthesis of polymer materials (e.g., redox-active polymers) from renewable resources (e.g., biomass, CO2, “green” hydrogen) or sustainable polymers for solar cells and power2X technologies is important here. In addition, experience in the re- cycling of polymers used for energy storage and conversion as well as catalysis is of interest. Additional experience in the field of sustainability assessment, e.g., life cycle analysis (LCA) of materials and en- ergy storage and conversion systems is of particular interest.

Active participation and membership in the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry Jena (CEEC Jena) are desired, as is involvement in coordinated collaborative projects. Management experience, ex- cellent publications and/or patents as well as successful acquisition of third-party funding are expected.

The prerequisites for employment are a completed degree, pedagogical proficiency, doctorate, habilitation or equivalent scientific achievement. The appointment is made as a civil servant for life, provided that the legal requirements are met. The teaching obligation includes 2 LVS. Knowledge of the German language is not a requirement for the position.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) and Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU Jena) are joining forces in the field of energy storage and conversion at the Helmholtz Institute for Polymers in Energy Applications (HIPOLE) Jena (www.hipole-jena.de), which has been founded in mid- 2023. HIPOLE Jena aims to promote the accelerated, knowledge-based development of sustainable polymer materials for scalable energy technologies. To this end, HIPOLE Jena focuses on three research pillars: 1) material design & synthesis, 2) scalability, prototypes and transfer, and 3) characterization, theory & modelling and data science. The research activities of the Chair of Sustainable Chemistry must be assigned to at least one of these pillars. Five research areas are pursued at the institute: 1) Polymer Redox-Flow Batteries, 2) Polymer-based Thin-Film Batteries, 3) Photovoltaics, 4) Functional Self-Healing Materials and the central area for the advertised professorship 5) Sustainable Chemistry. The latter area will focus in particular on the sustainable synthesis of polymer materials for energy storage and con- version.

Friedrich Schiller University and HZB aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and, therefore, strongly encourage suitably qualified female academics to apply. Disabled persons will be given preferential consideration in case of equal suitability.

For information on the procedure, please contact the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Prof. Dr. Nina Kukowski (dekanatchemgeo@uni-jena.de). For information about HIPOLE Jena, please contact the founding director, Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert (ulrich.schubert@uni-jena.de).

Applications in German or English with the usual documents (cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, copies of certificates and diplomas, documentation of teaching activities with evaluation results, list of publications, five selected offprints, third-party funding, research agenda) should be submitted as *.pdf files by 19.01.2025 via the University of Jena’s appointment portal at
