Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance in order to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has roughly 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of approximately SEK 8 billion.

The Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. Just over 100 people work at the institution. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Center in Uppsala, where there are good opportunities for collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab, as well as access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies.

A postdoctoral position for chemical synthesis of chemoselective probes is available in the research group run by Senior Lecturer Daniel Globisch. Globisch’s research group is international and conducts interdisciplinary research at a high level. The research focuses on developing new chemical biological methods to improve metabolomics-based research (Relevant literature: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.  2021 ,  60 , 23232, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2018 , 57 , 13805, Chem. Sci. 2023 , 14 , 5291, Chem. Comm. 2023 , 59, 5843). This research area is at the interface between biology and chemistry with a combination of chemical synthesis, mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites in biological samples, chemical biology techniques and the investigation of microbiome metabolism. This project is in close collaboration with Johannes Hov’s laboratory from Oslo University Hospital and the University of Oslo in Norway, which aims to investigate metabolomic changes in the liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). PSC is strongly linked to intestinal inflammation, providing a strong basis for focusing specifically on potential microbial metabolites. Our research group is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow with great drive and research interest to strengthen the ongoing research projects to develop new chemoselective methods.

Duties
The postdoctoral fellow will work on developing new methods for the analysis of metabolites using mass spectrometry and chemoselective metabolomics techniques. After development, methods will be used for the discovery and analysis of microbiome metabolites and biomarkers for liver disease. The postdoctoral work will include chemical synthesis, analysis and data management, precise documentation as well as collaboration with doctoral students, students and the laboratory of Johannes Hov. The postdoctoral position includes 100% research.

Qualification requirements
For employment, a doctoral degree and expertise in at least two of the following areas are required; (Bio)organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology and mass spectrometric analysis of biological samples. The PhD degree must have been received within three years at the time of employment. When calculating the framework period of three years, the starting point is the application deadline. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. By special reasons is meant leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, etc. Great importance will be placed on personal qualities such as good cooperation skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant, through his experience and competence, is judged to have the required abilities in order to develop the project. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required. Applicants should also have very good collaboration skills. Personal suitability will be taken into particular consideration during the selection process.

Desirable
Results from IELTS or TOEFL or equivalent are desirable in the application.
