Research Assistant -University of Cambridge

Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

Department/Location: Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute

Salary: £26,715-£30,942

Reference: SW23937

The IMAXT laboratory at the CRUK Cambridge Institute (part of the University of Cambridge) is seeking to hire a Research Assistant to collaborate at the realisation of the IMAXT project.

The IMAXT project is a large international consortium that employs cutting-edge technologies to produce 3D models of breast cancer in which the position of each cell is annotated along with its genetic and expression profile (see https://www.cruk.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/imaxt-laboratory for a more detailed description of the project). The successful applicant will assist with the development and application of a cutting-edge technology for spatial measurement of gene expression in tumours through in-situ hybridization (merFISH, see Chen et Al, Science, 2015 and Moffit et Al, Science 2019).

The selected applicant will prepare cell and tissue samples, define and assemble sets of probes to analyse the expression of specific gene sets, perform the merFISH protocol, and assist with the data analysis in collaboration with research associates and the group leader. In addition, they will assist in a number of accessory tasks necessary for the running of the project (cell culture, molecular biology, etc) and for the integration of merFISH data with other analysis modalities like multiplexed immunohistochemistry and 3D microscopy. This will be done in collaboration with the staff of the IMAXT laboratory, including approximately 15 people between graduate students, technicians, post-docs and data analysts. The selected applicant will also periodically report results in lab meetings and project meetings, in person or via teleconference.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and competent individual with excellent laboratory skills in molecular biology. Some experience in tissue culture, molecular cloning and microscopy is required, and extensive experience in cell biology and in-situ hybridization is preferable. The successful candidates should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Applicants should have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
