The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Chemistry and Biological Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering. The position is vacant from the 1st of September 2022.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.

The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Science and Technology. The education includes relevant courses to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. Read more about the PhD education at UiS on our website.

The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively.

Research topic

The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the research project: “Sustainable cultivation of Dulse” by the NORA (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation), an intergovernmental organisation under the regional cooperation programme of the Nordic Council of Ministers that brings together Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands and coastal Norway. The project aims to improve existing harvesting methods and establish new cultivation methods of the red seaweed species, Palmaria palmata (also called dulse), based on geographical specificity of each partner country.
The project is based on the “local phenotypic identity” of dulse, which can be related to geographical as well as physical differences (e.g. seawater temperature, salinity and daylength). In the project, common features and aspects will be used towards a common solution for both improved harvesting of wild dulse as well as new cultivation techniques. The purpose of the project is to uncover good practice for cultivating and harvesting the red algae “dulse” along the North Atlantic coastline. A joint study setup will be carried out at different locations associated with the project partners. The project is based on how results from these studies and knowledge exchange between the partners will generate a valuable knowledge base with special utility value for local start-up companies. The PhD candidate is expected to have stays at the consortium laboratories during the study period and contribute to the transfer of knowledge between the project participants from Norway, Iceland, Faeroe Islands and Greenland.
While contributing to develop reliable, cost-effective, and scalable production methods and protocols for cultivating and harvesting dulse in the different areas based on regional/national knowledge and experience as well as existing information. Additional research work will be dedicated to the documentation of the Dulce nutraceutical properties, which special focus on proteins and peptides. The PhD candidate is expected to get familiar with mass spectrometry equipment, being able to prepare, run and analyse project samples.
