The University of Nottingham seeks applications for a Research Fellow for a fixed-term 2 year contract in Suspension Thermal Spray (SPS) for thermal barrier coating (TBC) repair. SPS is an exciting new thermal spray technology with a high enthalpy spray torch that can produce designer coating compositions and microstructures for the next generation of greener, more efficient aero-engines. The researcher will be working on Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) funded REINSTATE Project: Repair, Enhanced Inspection, and Novel Sensing Techniques for increased Availability and reduced Through life Expense. Details: https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=51689
The researcher will be working closely with the REINSTATE team at the Rolls-Royce UTC in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology at the University of Nottingham. We have installed the UK’s only high power, high-efficiency axial injection SPS at the Coatings and Surface Engineering team in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham. You will be developing process parameter windows, repair protocol, miniaturisation strategies, sample characterisation using advanced in-situ electron microscopy, mechanical testing, thermal cycling and burner rig. The proposed research is leading-edge, and expected to lead to high-quality publications and industrial applications, making this an ideal training opportunity for an industrial or academic career. The researcher will join a vibrant, supportive world-class research team. You will be supervised by Dr Tanvir Hussain, Prof Adam Clare and Prof Dragos Axinte. Candidates must have an excellent understanding, and preferably direct experience of SPS or thermal barrier coatings (TBC).
This is a fixed-term position for 2 years. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.
Please direct informal enquiries to Dr Tanvir Hussain (Associate Professor, Coatings & Surface Engineering Team) at Tanvir.Hussain@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to these email addresses will not be accepted.
