The Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Philosophy with undergraduate teaching and tutorial responsibilities. The post is to cover some of the teaching and tutorial responsibilities of Dr Michael Hannon who has been awarded a visiting fellowship at Tulane University for the academic year 2021/22.

The role holder will be expected to convene our third-year political epistemology module Knowledge, Ignorance, and Democracy (module details are here). Depending on student enrolments there may also be some teaching responsibilities on large first and second year modules (such as Reasoning, Argument, and Logic and Mind, Knowledge, and Ethics), undergraduate dissertation modules, and/or some core MA modules.

The Department of Philosophy is based in the Humanities Building, located on the University’s main University Park campus. We are a large community, comprising around 25 academic staff. We welcome methodological and topical diversity, and our work covers a broad range of areas including Western, Indian, Chinese, analytic, and continental philosophy. We have a large number of undergraduate students, admitting more than 150 each year. Many students study single honours philosophy, but we also have significant numbers studying joint degrees with English, Psychology, Politics, Economics, Physics, and Theology. The department has thriving MA and PhD courses and a regular programme of research seminars, reading groups, and academic conferences.

We are looking for a philosopher who can contribute to the teaching and administration of the department. The successful candidate will design and deliver undergraduate modules using both online and offline methods. The well-being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. They will also be responsible for a reasonable share of departmental administration, both individually and in teams, so an ability to collaborate effectively with others is essential.

We warmly welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, including race, disability, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, and caring responsibility.  We are committed to creating diverse and inclusive environments for all staff and students to work and learn and offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements and Staff Support Networks.

Please note, the School of Humanities uses anonymised shortlisting to support our objective of reducing the impact of unconscious bias in staff recruitment, so CV’s and cover letters are not required for this application.

This role is available on a fixed term basis until 30/06/2022, available to start as soon as possible. Hours of work are part time (14.5 hours).

Informal inquiries may be sent to the Head of Department, Neil Sinclair (neil.sinclair@nottingham.ac.uk) or to the Deputy Head of Department, Penelope Mackie (Penelope.mackie@nottingham.ac.uk) . Interviews may occur via Skype or other video conferencing.

Our University has always been a supportive, inclusive, caring and positive community. We warmly welcome those of different cultures, ethnicities and beliefs – indeed this very diversity is vital to our success, it is fundamental to our values and enriches life on campus. We welcome applications from UK, Europe and from across the globe. For more information on the support we offer our international colleagues, see our Moving to Nottingham pages.
