The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (Schulich Medicine) at Western University (Western), London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s) are seeking a Chair/Chief for the Department of Oncology. Together, the hospitals provide comprehensive care to a large and geographically extended population of approximately 1.6 million people across Southwestern Ontario, based at LHSC, the region’s designated lead cancer hospital.
The Department of Oncology’s mission is to optimize the health and wellbeing of cancer patients by working together to deliver excellence and innovation in patient care, trainee education, and basic, translational and clinical research. The Department is composed of 155 multidisciplinary faculty members across four citywide Divisions of Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Experimental Oncology, as well as a satellite Windsor Oncology Division. Faculty members conduct internationally-recognized clinical, translational and basic cancer research in collaboration with our citywide partners including Western, the Lawson Health Research Institute and Robarts Research Institute; with a particular focus on advanced disease and therapeutic response and resistance. The Department offers vibrant education programs as part of the Schulich Medicine undergraduate medical curriculum (including clinical oncology teaching at the Windsor Campus), as well as postgraduate Royal College Accredited residency and fellowship programs for Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology. The Department also partners with the Basic Science Departments at Schulich Medicine to support cancer-focused basic science education programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. The Department of Oncology is based at LHSC’s London Regional Cancer Program, which serves as lead referral cancer treatment centre for the Southwestern Ontario region; with more than 7,000 new cancer patients seen each year. The program is designated as a Regional Cancer Program by Cancer Care Ontario and, as such, provides oversite of all aspects of cancer prevention, screening, and treatment. This includes a partnership with other centres across the region and in particular St Joseph’s with primary focus on ambulatory and short stay cancer surgery including breast and prostate cancer programs. The Department of Oncology shares LHSC’s and St. Joseph’s vision of integrated cancer care, research and education that aligns with Schulich’s Medicine mission of outstanding education in a research-intensive environment.
The successful candidate will be an exceptional leader with the vision and scholarly profile to understand and continue to develop the complex interrelationships between the clinical, research and education missions of the Department in the context of an evolving clinical cancer care system, increasing complexity of cancer treatment, increased survivorship, and increased incidence of cancer in an ageing population. They will have a strong record of clinical service, research excellence, education, and quality improvement; and will have demonstrated competency in leadership and the vision to expand the strengths of integrated teaching and research programs of the Department. The successful candidate should possess excellent business management skills, a sense of curiosity leading to quality improvement and strong emotional intelligence. The successful candidate must also have the skills and ability to work closely with citywide partners including Schulich Medicine, Western, Lawson Health Research Institute, LHSC and St Joseph’s. They must have a sense of entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated track record of change management. They must be an excellent communicator and be a strong advocate for the departmental mission and goals to its academic and clinical partners including patients, their families, and the Southwestern Ontario community.
The successful candidate will hold an M.D or equivalent and be certified or eligible to be certified as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan and academic support.
