The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for two (2) positions as Ontario Research Chairs (ORC) in Technology & Governance, to join a cluster of Ontario Public Policy Research Chairs. One appointment will be to the ORC in Governing Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and the second appointment will be to the ORC in Digital Governance for Social Justice. Both appointments are to a professorial stream, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. The appointments will be made to the most appropriate Department or School in the Faculty, which is contributing to Markham programming, depending on the expertise and qualifications of the successful applicants. The successful candidates will be based at York University’s new Markham Campus when operational (expected in Fall 2023) and become members of the first cohort of resident faculty members. Between July 1, 2022, and the opening of the new campus, the appointees will assume a combination of teaching responsibilities at York’s Keele campus and contribute to the development of academic and research programming planned for the new Markham Campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate for the ORC In Governing Artificial Intelligence will have a relevant PhD by the date of the appointment in one of the Social Sciences or Professions, for example, but not limited to: Public Policy, Law, Political Science, or Sociology. They will have a robust, established, ongoing research program that engages with the issues surrounding the governance of Artificial Intelligence and which aims to contribute to the development of robust, comprehensive policy frameworks for the governance of A.I. and Big Data in order to enable the benefits of A.I. while mitigating the risks of Big Data. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and teaching.
The successful candidate for the ORC in Digital Governance for Social Justice will have a relevant PhD by the date of appointment in one or more of the Social Sciences or Professions (for example, but not limited to: Communication/Media, Public Policy, Law, Political Science, Sociology). They will have a robust, established, ongoing research program in technology and governance which contributes to understanding how regulation can promote social justice, particularly the inclusion of the most marginalized and disadvantaged, through technological change. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and teaching.
The successful candidates will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level. Preference will also be given to candidates who have relevant practical experience that informs their research, and to those with a record of knowledge mobilization beyond the academy. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international caliber as demonstrated across the research statement; record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in their field; funding track record appropriate to their career stage; presentations at major conferences; research partnerships with industry, government or community organizations; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing. These two Chairs will each bring innovative programmes of research into the governance and regulatory challenges and opportunities in each of two of the Markham Centre Campus research clusters —A.I. and Society and Digital Cultures, including work that may contribute to both clusters.
Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference. In addition to undergraduate teaching, the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision and the successful candidates must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
