Tenure Track Position In English Language And Linguistics

We are now seeking an assistant professor, associate professor or full professor in the field of English language and linguistics.

The position is located in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The Languages Unit of the Faculty explores the intricacies of human interaction and communication in and across different languages. The research conducted in the Unit examines the functions of language in society and the challenges of cultural and linguistic diversity. The Degree Programme in Languages provides students with in-depth expertise in the areas of language, literature and translation. Students can major in Finnish, Swedish, English, Russian and German. The English section is the largest section in the Degree Programme, and currently has 17 permanent faculty members: seven in linguistics (this position included), five in translation, four in literature, and one in technical communication.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished scholar who will be an active and innovative co-builder of the research and teaching in the area of English language and linguistics.  In line with the spearhead profile of the university, research in the Languages Unit emphasizes the societal aspects of language, culture and literature. In addition to a strong research profile focusing on the empirical study of the structure, use and variation of English, we appreciate experience from cross disciplinary approaches to research.  For an applicant keen to explore new avenues of linguistic research, the faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences offers a unique multidisciplinary environment. Research groups working on areas such as robotics, virtual and augmented reality, multimodal genres (games, visual journalism, audio description etc.), usability and accessibility issues create a vibrant community for interdisciplinary collaboration.  We appreciate a demonstrated ability or willingness to utilize these opportunities in your research.

In addition to scientific research in this position you are expected to lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision in the Degree Programme in Languages, seek, win and manage research funding and demonstrate effective academic leadership engaging with external stakeholders.

The tenure track professor of English language and linguistics will also participate in research and teaching in the joint profile areas of the Languages Unit and the Degree Programme in Languages (digitality and media, literary and cultural spaces, linguistic variety, professional communication).

Requirements

Assistant Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

Associate Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity.

Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity

We are looking for demonstrable evidence of a suitability with the strategy of Tampere University and the Faculty and a description of how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group.

We offer

Initial appointment for assistant professor and for associate professor is for five years and subject to successful performance. You will become a tenured member of the Faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to Faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,600/month for an assistant professor and from €4,600 to €5,300/month for an associate professor and from 5500-6300 EUR/month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.
