The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), is looking for a
Language Instructor Japanese Language
Key responsibilities
- Teaching at primarily undergraduate but foreseeably also graduate, levels, in various teaching programmes of the Faculty, including BA International Studies, with the ability to teach integrated language skills. Emphasis is mainly on developing reading skills, including the teaching of how to read texts of various length and on various topics in advanced Japanese, including Japanese to Dutch translation;
- Contributions to curriculum development, including the development and use of digital learning tools;
- Liaison for the study-in-Japan program(s);
- Other administrative duties, commensurate with career stage.
Selection criteria
- MA in Japanese Studies, or equivalent;
- Native or near native fluency in Japanese;
- Native or near-native fluency in Dutch;
- Experience teaching various levels and skills (especially reading/translation, and kanji) of Japanese, including academic Japanese;
- Interests in material development and digital language teaching;
- The candidate is a team player and has experience with co-teaching;
- An excellent command of English. The MA program in Asian Studies and the BA program in International Studies are offered in English;
- Commitment to high-quality teaching practice, wide teaching scope in terms of content and audiences (e.g. students majoring in Japanese Studies, International Studies, and Asian Studies; students in other fields taking cross-listed electives; etc.);
- Administrative abilities, as measured against career stage;
- Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the instructor may be required to obtain an University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). A successful completion is a condition for extensions and conversion to a permanent position.

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden and in The Hague.
Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) is comprised of a School of Asian Studies, a School of Middle-Eastern Studies and a School of Religious Studies, with international staff and student populations. The institute is committed to a present-day vision of area studies, integrating disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives on a solid foundation of excellent language skills. Current staff in LIAS has expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archaeology, Art Studies, Buddhist Studies, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Material Culture Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Philosophy, Political Economy, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Visual Culture Studies.
As part of the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), the Japan Studies program is committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills. Priorities include cooperation across the full width of (East) Asian Studies. The local research environment includes an excellent library, and is further enhanced by research networks and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), and Leiden Asia Centre.
Terms and conditions
We offer a fixed-term position from August 2020 through July 2022, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 2,709.- to € 4,274.- gross per month (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) based on fulltime employment.
