Apply for an MMCA International Research Fellowship in Korea

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Korea (MMCA)is pleased to invite applications for the MMCA 2020 International Fellowship. The program is open to art professionals, including curators, researchers, critics and educators from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. – East, Eastern Europe, Central America and South America *, who wish to develop and share their research ideas related to modern and contemporary Korean art. The three selected participants will be paired with counselors who will provide intellectual support throughout the program. They will have the opportunity to visit museums and biennials, attend international conferences and share their thoughts and experiences with other Korean researchers and artists.
As part of the Cultural Partnership Initiative (IPC) project, the MMCA International Research Fellowship is supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Applicants with a nationality other than that mentioned above will NOT be considered.

1. Duration  : 4 months (July – October 2020)

2. Admission qualifications
– Citizens of the countries listed  here
– aged 25 to 45
– proficiency in English

3. Application process

4. Program requirements:
– Participants must conduct individual research on modern and contemporary Korean art.
– At the end of the program, researchers must submit and present the final dissertation.
– Participants are obliged to take Korean lessons given by the host institution.

5. Financial support

 Return plane ticket

 Roundtrip airfare (economy class) from the airport to the participant’s place of residence in Seoul, Korea

 Accommodation

 An individual studio inside the university campus will be provided. Utility charges are not included.

 Monthly allowance

 900,000 Korean won per month to cover food, transportation, taxes, utilities, entrance fees, etc. will be deposited into the participant’s Korean bank account at the end of each month.

 Tuition fees for the Korean course

 All participants are required to take the Korean course

 Traveler’s insurance costs

 Standard insurance coverage will be provided by the host institution. Detailed information will be given upon arrival of the participant. Any additional insurance can be organized and covered by the participants.

6. Commitments and regulations
The activities planned during the program must be in accordance with the initial intention. Participants will be released from the program when they participate in gainful activities or other activities unrelated to the purpose of visiting Korea. Participants generally cannot be accompanied by family or friends. The final report must be submitted at the end of the program. Confirmation of the training certificate will be issued by the host institution at the end of the program and the submission of the required results.
1) Drafting of the contractual agreement A contractual
agreement concerning the management and the obligations between the host institution and the participants will be drawn up for each party.
2) Additional events sponsored by the IPC
Secretariat The Secretariat will provide general guidance regarding the ICC project and life in Korea. Cultural trips, an international symposium, a farewell party and other events sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the IPC Secretariat are provided. All participants are requested to participate in these events.

7. Arrival process for selected participants
1) Required health examination documents
health examination must be carried out at the expense of the country of origin after notification to be selected as a participant in the program, and must be submitted to the host institution by mail. The document is required for the visa application. A doctor’s statement is required for the participant suffering from a long-term disorder such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, etc. Please note that the host establishment must organize a health examination of the participant upon arrival.
2) Documents for issuing the visa
The medjouel.com team informs you that it is necessary to obtain a valid visa from the Korean Embassy in the participant’s country. At the time of the visa application, the invitation letter will be organized by the host institution. However, the selected participants are required beforehand to fully submit the documents necessary for the issuance of the visa.
3) Enter Korea via Incheon International Airport. The
departures and later returned during the program are generally not allowed. In case of emergency, the scholarship holder must discuss with the institution before departure.
4) Personal  items
Personal items must be prepared for entry into Korea. All shipping costs must be covered by the participants, whether they enter or leave Korea.
5) Creation of a bank account
Upon arrival in Korea, the participant must open a bank account in his own name, to receive his monthly living expenses.
6) Registration card
for foreigners Registration of foreigners must be made immediately after entering the Republic of Korea and the registration card issued must be carried on the person at all times.
