The Copenhagen PhD program in bioscience annually recruits up to 16 motivated international students to launch their careers in the dynamic scientific environment of the research centers of the Novo Nordisk Foundation in Copenhagen. For registrations in September 2020, applications will be open from November 12, 2019. The registration deadline is January 9, 2020.
Please read the “Information and Guidelines for Applicants” carefully before starting the application process. Additional and essential information can be found in these guidelines.
The selection is based on academic results, research experience, academic references and interviews. A mandatory maintenance visit for up to 40 preselected candidates includes panel interviews, individual meetings with potential supervisors and visits to the four research centers of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and will take place in Copenhagen in March 2020. The Novo Nordisk Foundation will pay the travel and accommodation expenses of the selected candidates in connection with the interview.
The program offers support in finding accommodation in downtown Copenhagen for the first year.
Program overview
The four-year program is divided into a pre-doctoral year followed by three years of doctoral training in one of the four research centers of the Novo Nordisk Foundation integrated into the University of Copenhagen or the Technical University of Denmark:
Center for Basic Metabolic Research
The pre-doctoral year includes short rotation projects, the choice of a laboratory for the long-term project (PhD) and joint courses based on research. About 15% of the time during the pre-doctoral year is spent on courses, and the remaining 85% on laboratory research. All scholarship recipients must pass an evaluation at the end of the pre-doctoral year to qualify for the following three doctoral years.
All students in the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD program complete three two-week rotation projects at the start of the pre-doctoral year. These rotation projects allow students to gain experience with the methods, important scientific questions and research environment in the laboratories they wish to join. During each rotation project, the student and the supervisor should discuss potential long-term project ideas. After completing the three rotation projects, the student enters into an agreement with one of his rotation supervisors to join his laboratory for the long-term project (PhD).
For more information on the pre-doctoral year and courses, visit the website of the program.
Supervisors and areas of research

Each center conducts research in several research areas around a central theme of biotechnology or biomedicine. Further information on the research areas are available on the website of the program and the Center’s website (see links above).
Applicants must explain their interest in particular supervisors and / or research topics in the application form. Supervisors and potential projects are listed on the program’s website.
