Cancer Genomics and Evolution Laboratory, Prof. Dr. Peter Van Loo, Department of Genetics

We seek multiple talented and motivated postdocs in computational biology to join the Cancer Genomics and Evolution Laboratory of Peter Van Loo at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The post holders will spearhead projects in large-scale cancer genomics and evolution.

The Cancer Genomics and Evolution laboratory

Our research focuses on large-scale pan-cancer genomics to gain insight into the genes, mutational processes and evolution of cancer. Our work is highly data-driven, with a focus on large-scale data analysis to gain broad biological insight and on the development of computational methods to enable conceptually novel analyses. The research group is mostly computational with a small wet-lab component.

Since its inception, members of the Cancer Genomics laboratory have co-authored 18 papers in Nature, Science or Cell. Recent successes include pan-cancer studies of the evolutionary history of cancer (Gerstung et al.Nature 2020), intra-tumor heterogeneity (Dentro et al.Cell 2021), the mutational landscape in non-unique regions of the human genome (Tarabichi et al.Nature Biotechnology 2021), and biallelic mutations (Demeulemeester et al.Nature Genetics 2022).

Position qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in computational biology (bioinformatics, genomics, …) and research experience in the field of cancer genomics, although we welcome applications from candidates with diverse educational backgrounds, including computational biology, physics and (bio)statistics, biology or medicine. Applicants must have a proven publication record.

A computational background is not strictly necessary, but you must be keen to work in a dry setting. Prior experience with handling massively parallel sequencing data is considered an advantage.

Postdocs will spearhead projects in cancer genomics and tumor evolution. They are expected to lead their own project, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both within the lab and with external collaborators) and guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential.
