European Union health experts on Friday highlighted the possibility of a second wave of Covid-19 disease requiring reimposition of general isolation measures in Europe, and said the possibility is medium to high and depends on the gradual relaxation of restrictions and the extent of people’s engagement.
An assessment of the pandemic by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention also predicts a moderate increase in infection rates in the coming weeks, even if it indicates that the transmission of the infection has exceeded its peak in the most European countries.
“The pandemic is not over,” said center director Andrea Amon in a statement accompanying the evaluation. She added that although Covid-19 infections have decreased across Europe, more is needed to reduce the spread of the disease. “It is important to respect the recommendations on social isolation and to maintain high standards of public health … everyone’s contribution is important,” she added.
The Stockholm-based European Center for Disease Control and Prevention monitors and makes recommendations on disease and public health in the European Union. His assessment concluded that the strict social divergence measures imposed by many governments reduced the spread of the disease.
