Working in Germany: The most demanded trades

The federal government is developing an immigration law for qualified foreigners. It will make it easier for international applicants to find a job in Germany. But skilled foreigners already have great opportunities to find well-paying jobs in Germany.

1 Nurses and nursing assistants.

The demographic evolution is more and more visible in Germany. With the gradual aging of the population and the increase in their life expectancy, the need for stationary and ambulatory care services increases. It is always more difficult for health professionals, hospitals, retirement homes and other healthcare facilities to attract and retain enough staff. According to  an analysis of the shortage of staff  carried out by the Federal Employment Agency, only 19 people are interested in the 100 vacancies for nurses in geriatrics. The sustainability of qualified human resources in the health and care professions is therefore a major challenge in Germany.

Good prospects for foreign healthcare staff

Anyone wishing to practice nursing in Germany requires state authorization. In order to obtain recognition of their professional qualifications, these must generally be adapted to the linguistic and technical level. A request for professional recognition can be filed with the competent authority of the land in which the person wishes to work. The professional recognition then obtained is valid throughout Germany. The following criteria are taken into consideration:

  • A recognized diploma:  The nursing diploma which you obtained in your country of origin must be recognized in Germany. The competent authority concerning you checks whether your professional diploma is equivalent to German diplomas. If this is not the case, you can carry out an adaptation internship.
  • Sufficient knowledge of German:   Depending on the land in question, your level of German must correspond to level B2 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
  • Medical fitness  By obtaining the certificate of a German doctor, you must prove that you are in good physical and mental health and that you are thus able to exercise the profession of nursing assistant.
  • Reliability:  To prove your reliability, you need proof of impunity. Depending on the situation, you must provide a  criminal record extract  from your home country or Germany.

For the recognition of a diploma, it is not the nationality but the place of obtaining the diploma which is decisive.

2 Medicine

Hospitals and practices are looking for around 5,000 doctors in Germany. Anyone with a foreign medical degree can obtain recognition and practice in Germany since 2012. This applies to candidates from EU member states and non-European countries. It is necessary to obtain recognition of the diploma as being equivalent to the training of doctors in Germany.

3 Engineering

For engineers, the most sought-after specialties are mechanical and automobile construction, electrical engineering, construction, IT and telecommunications.

Lifeguard:  If the beach is more your thing, Germany has 2,389 kilometers of coastline and the sandy sites of the Baltic and North Sea coasts are a popular destination for tourists.
