Shared Health and the Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba invite applications for a full-time physician at the Assistant, Associate or Professor rank in the Section of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.  The section is one of 17 in the Department of Internal Medicine, providing patient care, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, and research.  This is a geographical, full-time, contingent position commencing November 1, 2023, or as soon thereafter as possible, renewable upon favorable review. Salary and academic rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

The Section of Allergy & Immunology has access to substantial resources within the health system, primarily at two academic health centres and one community-based hospital.  There are presently 4 full-time academic allergy and clinical immunology physicians within the Section with major clinical and investigative responsibilities in allergy and clinical immunology, and additional part time members.

Based at the Health Sciences Centre, the successful candidate will be a clinician investigator with protected research time and a proven track record in research.  They will have a strong record of publications in high impact journals commensurate with their stage of career, and proven ability to obtain peer-reviewed research funding from recognized granting agencies.  The applicant will have demonstrated a high capacity to successfully interact and collaborate with other clinical and basic scientists locally and/or abroad.

Candidates must have specialty qualifications in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. The Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, and Shared Health Manitoba are seeking a clinician-investigator or clinician-scientist to be nominated to the Morberg Family Chair in Hepatology. This endowed chair is designed to provide the holder with salary support and/or operating funds to pursue investigator driven, independent research in Hepatology. Depending on interest and qualification, the successful candidate may also be eligible to be appointed as Head of the Section of Hepatology.

The Section of Hepatology is one of 18 academic sections in the Department of Internal Medicine providing patient care, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, and has a long track record in active clinical and lab-based research. The section’s 10 faculty members actively collaborate with scientists from other sections, departments and institutions across Canada and beyond. Local opportunities for research collaborations include, but are not limited to, the department’s own Manitoba Center for Proteomics and Systems Biology, the Department of Community Health Sciences, the Manitoba Center for Health Policy, and the National Microbiology Laboratory/Public Health Agency of Canada based in Winnipeg.

This is a geographical, full-time, contingent position, with a start date of November 1, 2023, or negotiable based on the successful candidate’s availability, for a term of 5 years, renewable upon favourable review.

The successful candidate, based at the Health Sciences Centre, will be part of a busy and expanding liver disease program and report to the Department Head of Internal Medicine and Provincial Specialty Lead – Internal Medicine, Shared Health. The successful candidate will be a clinician-investigator or clinician-scientist at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor rank with proven research track record/research potential in the field. Salary and academic rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

The candidate will have demonstrated an ability to successfully interact and collaborate with other clinical and/or basic scientists within their University, nationally and/or internationally.

If interested also in the Section Head position, leadership, and administrative skills to coordinate and enhance our academic and clinical program in Hepatology are additional requirements.

Candidates must demonstrate broad experience in clinical management of liver diseases (including pre- and post-transplant) and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.  The successful candidate must have an MD degree or both MD and PhD degrees. The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA), a national centre hosted in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto, invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Cosmology. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2024.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Theoretical Astrophysics or a related area, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths in the Institute with a focus on cosmology and/or the early universe. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments (including the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students), and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

The successful candidate will have a record demonstrating scientific leadership, creativity and technical depth throughout their career, as evidenced in their application materials.

CITA is the only national astrophysics theory institute in the world. The Department of Zoology in the Faculty of Science at The University of British Columbia invites applications for two Assistant/Associate Professor positions in Evolutionary Biology.  Preference is for appointments at the level of Assistant Professor, although appointments at the Associate Professor level will be considered in exceptional circumstances. We seek applicants with an innovative research program to address fundamental aspects of evolution. We are excited to consider applications from all areas of evolutionary biology. Research areas that we are excited to see include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

  • Machine learning/deep learning/ neural nets in evolutionary biology, including methods, data analysis and model testing.
  • The development and/or application of comparative and phylogenetic comparative methods.
  • High density phenomics, including the collection and/or analysis of large-scale phenotypic datasets related to morphology, behaviour or any other complex phenotype.
  • Evolutionary development.
  • Field-based approaches to evolutionary biology that study processes in natural settings.

Each position requires a Ph.D. degree, postdoctoral experience, and a strong record of research publications with demonstrated influence and creativity. Responsibilities include establishing and conducting an internationally competitive and externally funded research program, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising graduate students, and participating on service committees for the department, university, and academic/scientific community. Sustainable Ocean Alliance and Environmental Defense Fund are proud to offer the Leadership for Climate-Resilient Fisheries (LCRF) fellowship. This program supports early career change-makers and fishing community members who are working to advance fisheries and their communities’ ecological and socioeconomic resilience to climate change. Fellows receive grant funding and capacity-building experiences in the form of mentorship and training facilitated by Sustainable Ocean Alliance and the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate-Resilient Fisheries and Oceans teams. Through the fellowship, SOA and EDF aim to build an ecosystem of fisheries-focused leaders who understand the principles of climate resilience and how to advance locally-appropriate solutions to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

To date, 30 fellows from 15 countries have participated in three fellowship cohorts:

  • 2021 LCRF-Southeast Asia
  • 2022 LCRF-US
  • 2023 LCRF-Global

LCRF

About the 2023 US Fellowship: 

The 2023 fellowship is for projects that impact a US-based fishery. The fellow term begins October 16, 2023 and ends July 26, 2024, and includes an in-person capacity-building seminar in Washington D.C. over two days in February 2024. All costs related to travel and lodging in D.C. will be covered. In addition to this trip, fellows are expected to attend at least three workshops led by EDF.

Application Requirements

Preference is given to projects affiliated with an organization, and the maximum grant award is $15,000 US. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and recipients will be notified by October 13, 2023.

  • Initiatives must impact United States fisheries
  • Applicant must be 18-35 years old and/or possess 10 years or fewer of relevant experience
  • Proposals must include outputs (see "Outputs and Activities") that are complete in time for the final report on July 26, 2024. (By which time all grant funds must be spent).

Program Components

As part of the program, fellows build a stronger foundation of technical and leadership skills through mentorship, skill building workshops, and online resources from the EDF Fishery Solutions Center. Participants will gain a profound understanding of the impacts of climate change on fisheries, and learn about best practices to identify and advance solutions for greater resilience.

In support of project advancement, fellows will develop and track key performance indicators to serve as guiding metrics around sustainability and resilience.

The Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) program encourages the use of innovative wood-based building technologies in construction projects. This program supports Canada’s commitment to reach 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets under the Paris Agreement and advance long-term priorities regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction.

GCWood invests in wood construction projects that generate many benefits, including:

  • reduced GHG emissions from renewable and sustainable resources that help decarbonize the built environment
  • accelerated adoption of innovative building technologies and systems
  • updated building codes that allow for taller and larger wood buildings
  • affordable housing and community infrastructure

Demonstration projects

Since 2017, the program has successfully funded 16 demonstration projects to de-risk and support the greater adoption and commercialization of wood-based products in the construction of tall and low-rise wood buildings and timber bridges. As of March 2023, the program has funded 4 tall wood building projects, 10 low-rise non-residential building projects, and 2 timber bridge projects.

The program produced the 2021 State of Mass Timber in Canada report and an interactive map to record, review, and analyze the rise of mass timber construction in Canada. Applicants are encouraged to review the report and interactive map to see the progress Canada has made in mass timber production, design and building, and the potential for ongoing leadership in this area.

As part of its renewal, the program has expanded its focus to fund the demonstration of schematic designs, innovative building systems for wood construction, and the use of advanced building bio-products in new and existing buildings that have low GHG emissions, are regionally representative, and are highly replicable. The GCWood program provides non-repayable contributions of up to $1.4 million of a project’s eligible costs.

The program will seek to target innovative building solutions and schematic designs under key areas of interest including, but not limited to, prefabrication including modular buildings, retrofits, and design for disassembly/adaptability.


Eligibility

GCWood funding is open to the following applicants:

  1. Legal entities validly incorporated or registered in Canada, including:
    • for-profit and not-for-profit organizations such as companies, industry associations, research associations, and standards associations
    • Indigenous organizations and groups
  2. Provincial, territorial, regional, and municipal governments and their departments and agencies, where applicable

How to apply and key dates

The GCWood program launched an ongoing Expression of Interest (EOI), which is designed to identify potential demonstration projects for funding. Applications can be submitted within our 4 application windows, detailed below. The program will process and assess proposals based on the submission date and will provide ongoing decisions as they are determined. Proposals will be assessed in the order in which they are received and efforts will be made to ensure funding is distributed appropriately across all windows.

Note: The screening process for EOIs may take between 15 to 45 days.

The program will conduct webinars to provide information on how to submit online applications, including a question and answer period with program officials. The webinar dates for the first solicitation window are included below. Additional dates for upcoming windows will be provided as they become available. The program uses a two phase application process:

Phase 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)

The initial proposal process requests high-level information about your organization and project.

To complete a proposal, you will need to log in with a GCKey through the NRCan Online Submission Portal.

Submit an EOI for the stream you are applying for. You can find additional details in the GCWood Applicant Guidebook. The form will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

We strongly recommend preparing your responses in a document offline using the EOI template before copying them into the online form and submitting. Please also ensure you save the online form often (every 10 to 15 minutes).

You can save your progress and return to it at any time or review the form structure prior to beginning the process to get an idea of what to expect. You will also be able to view your EOI after you have submitted it. You can submit multiple EOIs.

Program staff will review your EOI and contact you about next steps.

Phase 2: Full Project Proposal (FPP)

Applicants who are selected to move on to Phase 2 will receive a link and an editable form to the FPP. They will be asked to submit additional information and documentation such as business financials and project plans.

Applications will be assessed against the specified Rated Program Criteria that can be found in the GC Wood Applicant Guidebook.

Final funding decisions will consider the assessment results and other criteria, such as:

  • funding requested per year and GCWood budget availability
  • distribution of funding to projects across Canada
  • distribution of funding to projects that align with eligible project categories

The assessment criteria will establish a prioritized list of eligible projects. NRCan may provide some or all the funds requested, based on the number of successful projects, the proposal evaluations, and the amount of funding available in a given year.

To apply, applicants must complete and submit their EOI form via the NRCan Online Submission Portal by 11:59 pm PST on September 30, 2023 for consideration within the first solicitation window.

The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies and the International Service for Human Rights are organizing a training to equip human rights defenders with the knowledge and skills to integrate the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (“the ACHPR”) into their existing work at the national level in a strategic manner and provides an opportunity for participants to prepare for and engage in lobbying and advocacy activities at the ACHPR with the aim to effect change back home at the national level.   Are you a civil society actor, a representative from an African civil society organization or an international organization from East, North, Central, or North Africa? OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the course fall into the following three broad categories:
  • A) Supporting human rights defenders:
    • ● Develop human rights defenders’ advocacy skills and expertise;
      • ● Enhance the ability of human rights defenders to engage strategically with the ACHPR and other international human rights mechanisms, as well as to develop diplomatic and civil society networks;
        • ● Improve the quality of NGO participation in the ACHPR, with a view to exert a greater influence on human rights foreign policy;
          • ● Share tools and knowledge, which human rights defenders can use to ensure their voice is central in international human rights decision-making; ● Develop advocacy strategies for specific issues, and to ensure follow-up and action on the ACHPR’s resolutions;
            • ● Increase human rights defenders’ understanding of the short, mid and longer-term opportunities provided by African human rights mechanisms;
              • ● Explore and compare the benefits of engagement with these mechanisms, and examine how advocates can use them to bolster their work at the national level;
                • ● Develop strategies and lobbying techniques to increase the potential of human rights defenders’ national and regional advocacy work.
                  • B) Influencing the substantive outcomes of regional human rights mechanisms in a positive manner, including ACHPR resolutions and the work of ACHPR thematic and country specific human rights experts (such as the Special Rapporteur).
                    • C) Creating a peer group of human rights defenders working on a diverse range of issues, identifying best practice in advocating for human rights change, and exchanging lessons and experiences in conducting regional/international advocacy.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is committed to improving health and health equity in the United States. In partnership with others, RWJF is working to develop a Culture of Health rooted in equity that provides every individual with a fair and just opportunity to thrive, no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have. RWJF focuses on identifying and addressing barriers to health, including all forms of discrimination, such as structural racism, sexism, ableism, and prejudice based on sexual orientation.

The RWJF Health Policy Fellows program supports RWJF’s vision for building a Culture of Health by creating a strong and diverse leadership in health policy committed to advancing health and health equity. Initiated in 1973, this is a nonpartisan fellowship program located in Washington, D.C., for midcareer professionals interested in increasing their expertise in health policy.

The program is seeking outstanding midcareer health professionals, behavioral and social scientists, and others with an interest in health and the drivers of health who are skilled and committed; with expertise in health and health equity; and can offer an informed perspective on important and complex challenges facing policymakers. Fellows actively participate in the policy process in congressional or executive branch offices of their choosing and leverage this leadership experience to promote policies, practices, and systems changes that advance health and health equity. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) conducts and administers the fellowship, with funding support from RWJF.

The fellowship requires a full-time commitment starting in September with a minimum 12-month residence in Washington, D.C., which prepares individuals to influence the future of health in the nation. Fellows will meet with national leaders well-versed in health, healthcare policy, health equity, social determinants of health, and structural racism; think tanks and interest groups; key executive branch officials; and members of Congress and their staffs. A concentrated orientation is designed to prepare the fellows for immediate success in federal legislative and executive branch positions.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

Exceptional midcareer professionals from academic institutions, not-for-profit organizations, or government (including military; U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs; U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; and state offices who are not considered government officials under Section 4946 of the Internal Revenue Code). • Applicants must have earned an advanced degree (masters or doctoral degree) • In addition, applicants must have deep experience and subject matter expertise in a health-related discipline. Examples include but are not limited to medicine; nursing; public health; law, dentistry; economics and other social sciences (especially disciplines related to factors that influence population health, such as housing, transportation, nutrition, wealth, employment, education, and environmental and community conditions); health services and social work/behavioral health; and other health professions. • Applicants whose official job description or responsibilities are primarily government relations or advocacy are not eligible. • Individual candidates for receipt of award funds must be U.S. citizens, or permanent residents at the time of application. Because the RWJF Health Policy Fellows are placed in assignments in the federal government, changes in federal policy or law may necessitate that RWJF consider adjustments in eligibility and grant terms, as well as placements in the program. • Additionally, individual candidates for receipt of award funds cannot be related by blood or marriage to any Officer or Trustee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, or be a descendant of its founder, Robert Wood Johnson.

If the work being rewarded has been produced by two or three persons, the Prize shall be awarded to them jointly. The Prize may not be shared by more than three persons. The candidates shall be nominated by the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions for UNESCO, science institutions and associations, and by non-governmental organizations in official partnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize. Nominations from individuals will not be accepted.

Do you have an idea for an event, initiative, program or service but don't have enough money to turn it into reality? Consider applying for a Youth Grant. The purpose of this fund is to provide seed money to support or initiate events, programs and services for children and youth in the City of North Vancouver. All activities supported by this fund must be based in the City of North Vancouver, or be of primary benefit to children and youth residents in the City.
This fund is not available for sports programs, or to supplement core funding for Outreach Youth Services. Efforts should be made to involve children and youth who are not normally involved in community activities. Grants approved under this fund shall be for new events, programs or services, or to enhance existing events, programs or services, which have proven successful.

Agency Initiated Projects or Events ($3,000)

The City offers grants of up to $3,000 for special projects undertaken for children and youth up to the age of 21 years. Projects funded by these grants should be preventative in nature, providing children and youth with information, skills and activities, which enable them to live fuller, more productive, lives. Grants of up to $3,000 will be available as seed money for new projects, or to augment existing programs. Grants may be used to cover staffing costs and/or program expenses. Preference will be given to projects which exhibit inter-agency collaboration and which give special consideration to integrating children and youth with disabilities, from low-income families and of ethnic minorities.

Youth Initiated Projects or Events ($500)

The City offers grants of up to $500 for projects and events undertaken for youth between the ages of 12 and 21 years. These grants are intended to provide youth with funding assistance to put on community projects and events. The grant may be used to cover expenses such as building rental, equipment rentals, publicity, entertainment and/or refreshments.

All completed submissions received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Children and Youth Initiatives Committee. This committee will make recommendations to Council regarding allocations. The winner(s) will be presented with an award by Council at a regular City Council meeting.
