Position Description The Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Transdisciplinary Professorship in Digital Mental Health. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Arts. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Mental health problems are increasing world-wide, with 1 in 4 people estimated to have some disorder. One approach to addressing this burden is to capitalize on digital technology (e.g., e-mental health). The application of digital technology to mental health requires transdisciplinary work. UCalgary is poised to address this challenge by leveraging transdisciplinary strengths across departments, faculties, and interdisciplinary and dynamic research institutes in novel ways, thereby positioning UCalgary as a unique national and international leader in research in this area in Canada.

The successful candidate for this position will bring expertise in child and/or adult clinical psychology to a digital mental health research program. This could include, but is not limited to, delivery and evaluation of mental health programs that occur remotely using just-in-time interventions, real-time assessment that could be used to evaluate or guide treatment, or other related research themes. This position would provide a partial teaching release (50%) for 5 years to provide protected research time. We expect interdisciplinary approaches to research and training, and strongly encourage affiliation and collaboration with some or all (depending on the specific research focus) of our research institutes including the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) which is responsible for the Child Health and Wellness research priority and the One Child Every Child research initiative, the Owerko Centre, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI), and the Mathison Centre.

We are seeking applications from individuals with a PhD in Clinical Psychology who are eligible for registration as a psychologist in Alberta. Applicants should have an emerging or demonstrated potential for a research focus in digital mental health, preferably from a transdisciplinary perspective. Hires into these transdisciplinary positions are encouraged to form ties to other units on campus (e.g., Psychiatry, Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology, etc.); adjunct appointments are possible.

These criteria will be judged based on the impact of publications or other scholarly activity; teaching dossier with teaching philosophy, ratings or evaluations where possible, or other indications of quality; awards, scholarships, and other recognitions for excellence in research, teaching and community engagement; and record of competitive funding, including competitive studentships and fellowships. Experience in transdisciplinary collaborative research or teaching will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain an active research program, and to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research supervision in both undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, some administrative service to the department, the faculty, the university and/or the community is expected.

About the position

The PhD position is a three-year fulltime position that involves 30 ECTS credits of required course work. This is equivalent to one semester of study. The remaining time is allocated to the development and completion of an independent research project, which takes the form of a written dissertation. The three-year employment period granted to the successful candidate may be reduced if the successful candidate has previously been employed in a PhD position.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in the Oslo region during the employment period and to take an active part in scholarly and social activities at Kristiania.

About the project

The PhD project is affiliated with a project on Sustainable Innovations for Fashion and Reuse (SIFAR). The overarching aim of the project is to use data analytics or AI to develop new strategies, practices, or technologies to reduce, manage, or transform fashion waste, thereby promoting more sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

The successful candidate must design an independent project that fits within the theme, research questions, and scope of the main project. The successful candidate should formulate the project such that it is integral to the development of knowledge within the area addressed by this main project. Questions of potential interest include (but are not limited to): How do behavioural biases influence consumer decision-making in clothing rental settings, and what is the impact of these biases on the profitability of a rental business model? What factors influence procurement decisions in clothing rental businesses? How can understanding these factors lead to developing best practices and strategies for a sustainable and profitable rental model in the fashion industry? How do inventory management, transportation, distribution, and returns processing practices influence the efficiency and sustainability of the rental clothing supply chain? What are the key patterns and trends in customer behaviour within the fashion rental market, and how can data analytics be employed to optimize inventory management, marketing, and promotional strategies for different customer segments?

Qualifications and personal qualities

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive research on the status of fashion waste, including waste generation, disposal methods, and the environmental impacts.
  • Develop and test innovative strategies for reducing, recycling, or reusing fashion waste.
  • Collaborate with a fashion rental company to develop effective, feasible, and sustainable fashion waste management solutions.
  • Present research findings at conferences, seminars, and other academic and industry events.
  • Write and publish high-quality academic papers.
  • Participate in grant applications and securing funding for future research.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (ECTS or equivalent) in Information Systems, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business, or a closely related field with a grade B or better on the master’s thesis and for the master’s degree in total. The master’s thesis must be a minimum of 30 ECTS or equivalent.
  • Relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English.
  • Competence in data analytics, including the ability to acquire, manage, analyze, and report findings on relevant big datasets. The ability to use appropriate tools is assumed across the process.
  • A demonstrated interest in sustainable fashion, waste management, or environmental impact studies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Curiosity and a strong motivation to carry out independent research.
  • Good communication and cooperation skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • The ability, desire, and capacity to work independently, systematically, and purposefully.

Faculty will review applications until the position is filled. If selected for an interview, a candidate will have a one-hour zoom meeting with project faculty. During this interview, students will be asked to make a presentation that addresses the following:

1) A brief summary of yourself, your education, and your research experience. Please limit this to 1 – 2 slides.

2) An example of a research project that most clearly illustrates your data analytics expertise. This presentation should include:

  • A data analytics project that you have conducted earlier. Explain the methodology, associated phases, data acquisition, preprocessing, analytics algorithms, and project risks and mitigations. The software tools and libraries selected and used for the project should also be listed.
  • This should constitute the bulk of your presentation, approximately 20-30 minutes.

3) One idea from the project’s broad scope that is of particular interest to you (e.g., if you are most interested in inventory management within the fashion industry, clearly articulate your question, why it is of interest to you, what background you have to help prepare you to do further research in this area, etc.). This portion should take 10 – 15 minutes of your presentation.

4) Any questions that you have for the faculty team.

The EMAT research group at the Faculty of Science (University of Antwerp) is seeking to fill 2 PhD positions in the area of Quantitative in situ electron microscopy of metal halide perovskite materials under the supervision of Prof Sara Bals and Prof Van Aert.

Light detection and emission are crucial for displays, medical and security scanners. Given the societal relevance, there is an emerging need for novel opto-electronic materials with higher conversion efficiency and lower production cost. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are promising high-performance semiconductors due to their strong absorption and emission in a broad spectral range and their ease of manufacturing. So far, integration in opto-electronic devices was hampered by inherent stability issues such as the degradation from the optically active “black” phase into an inactive phase. In this project, we explore a fundamentally new route to stabilize the black phase under ambient conditions. The role of the PhD student is to develop and apply novel low-dose electron microscopy techniques and perform a quantitative analysis of the obtained data. EMAT is one of the leading electron microscopy centers in the world and has a vast expertise in both fundamental and applied electron microscopy. Position

  • You will develop and apply low-dose TEM techniques such as exit wave reconstruction and integrated differential phase contrast imaging to investigate CsPbI3 thin films without electron beam damage.
  • You will expand these techniques to 3 dimensions using electron tomography approaches.
  • You will combine all of the novel methodologies with in situ investigation using different dedicated holders (eg strain, bias, gas, heating).
  • You will develop quantitative methods to analyse and correctly interpret low-dose TEM data. Because of the low electron dose that is required to image the MHPs without beam damage, the resulting images will exhibit very low signal-to-noise ratio and extremely weak contrast, which makes this research very challenging.
  • You will use statistics-based methods to measure unknown structure parameters, including atom positions, atom types, and number of atoms along the viewing direction. These measurements need to be done as accurately and precisely as possible.
  • You will investigate the possibilities of applying the concept of deep learning. By training a convolutional neural network, in which detailed image simulations are used as an input, we expect to be able to reliably locate even the lightest atomic elements.
  • You will introduce and apply new quantitative analysis tools to track changes in the atomic structure over time under operando conditions.

Responsibilities

In your role as a postdoctoral scientist, you will focus on application of (advanced) computational and bioinformatics methods to cancer tumour expression data (bulk RNAseq, single-cell RNAseq and spatial omics datasets), in-sync with clinical patient data to ultimately derive results relevant for immuno-oncology and cancer immunotherapy. Eventually these analyses pipelines will also integrate with other omics modalities in collaboration with other labs working in the GLIOMATCH consortium.

Overall, you will have the unique opportunity to shape as well as lead a high-impact immuno-oncology relevant computational/bioinformatics project aiming to elaborate the intricate cross-talk between various immune cells and the glioblastoma micro-environment in the context of clinical immunotherapy including (but not limited to) anticancer vaccines. These exciting research lines have a lot of translational potential for glioblastoma patients, as the field of cancer immunotherapy is rapidly expanding but remains in desperate need for biomarkers capable of guiding clinical decisions.

While spearheading this exciting and state-of-the-art research initiative, you will also be expected to have good communication skills, a highly collaborative spirit and willingness to work in collaboration with several different teams and clinicians. You will also be expected to provide advice and guidance to PhD students or postdocs from within our teams or other collaborating teams on computational analyses, especially spatial omics.

You should be able to organize and troubleshoot your work independently, document it thoroughly and communicate results and experience with the team in a transparent and professional manner.

Profile

We are looking for a computational biologist/bioinformatician who is highly motivated, well organized, and dynamic with a high level of independence and creative thinking but a flexible research approach:

  • You need to have a PhD with a topic in one of the following areas: Bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology or similar.
  • Experience with computational immunology and/or spatial omics is an added advantage.
  • You should be able to demonstrate following skills: analysing and deciphering transcriptomic/genomic data, deriving systems biology-driven networks from omics data, proficiency with computational programming (e.g. R language/Python), analysis of publicly available cancer genetic expression datasets, and skills in application of statistical approaches to biological problems (e.g. statistical testing, linear modelling).
  • A proven and successful publication track record in this field.
  • High intrinsic motivation and a strong scientific curiosity.
  • Ability to be inventive and to present novel ideas in method development, data analysis and interpretation.
  • Team player that can work independently in a multidisciplinary (international) team.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Proactive, flexible, and problem-solving attitude.
  • Experience in working with deadlines and being involved in multiple projects.

You will work as a PhD student in an interdisciplinary team, contributing to the FWO WEAVE project "The Slavonic Metaphrasis of Byzantine Orthodoxy. A Digital Inventory of South Slavonic Translation Literature applied to Research on Translated Authority and Linked Texts". Project

Medieval Slavonic literature consists mostly of translations of Byzantine Greek works. It is a normative literature deeply imbued with a sense of tradition and religious and textual orthodoxy, but at the same time it is the product of the inherently transformative process of translation (metaphrasis). In this project you address these normative and transformative tendencies that have shaped the textual culture of the Slavonic Middle Ages. You study textual authority and the role of the Byzantine ‘florilegic habit’ in Greek-Slavonic translation literature and develop digital tools, drawing on the life's work of one of the most renowned modern scholars of Slavonic literature. From 1975 until his death, Francis Thomson (1935-2021) prepared a catalogue of Greek-Slavonic translation literature: his work resulted in an unpublished Cartotheca of more than 100,000 handwritten index cards, which constitutes an invaluable source of information for the project. The digitization of this Cartotheca is part of the project. This PhD position will focus on the investigation of text collections, the authority of tradition and conceptions of orthodoxy, with a case study that involves florilegia and question-and-answer literature. As a topic for that case study the principal investigators (PIs) propose the tradition, Greek context and transmission of the Slavonic 'Sotêrios', but well-argued alternatives that fit within the frame of the project can be considered. In your research and in the development of the digital card index, you collaborate intensively with the Leuven PIs and occasionally with Prof. Jürgen Fuchsbauer (Innsbruck).

Profile

The successful candidate:
- combines an MA in Classics (Greek) or Byzantine Studies with proficiency in Old Slavonic and/or an MA in Slavistics combined with proficiency in (Byzantine) Greek; - has an interest in expanding their expertise to include digital approaches; - has an excellent oral and written command of English or German; - is willing and able to work both independently and as part of a broader research team; - is expected to spend on average 80% of their time on their PhD research, and 20% on database development and academic and administrative services to the project and the research group; - is expected to work in Leuven and is willing to work abroad in Innsbruck for 6 months.

The full-time position is normally for 4 years, contingent upon positive evaluation after the first year (= initial 1-year contract, extended by 3 years after positive evaluation). The starting date is September 2, 2024, or as soon as possible.

Position

  • You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis, written in English or in Dutch, on the topic of “Effective horizontal enforcement of the vertically imposed rule of law requirements in the European Union through the Member States’ judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters”. More specifically, you will investigate whether and how EU Member State courts, when they operate within the framework of European judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, can effectively contribute to the enforcement of the rule of law standards under EU law, taking into account the requirement of mutual trust between the Member States.
  • You publish scientific articles in the field of your doctoral research project and present your research finding at (inter)national conferences.
  • You will carry out your research in the framework of the research group on Government and Law, in collaboration with the Department of Public Law and Governance of Tilburg Law School, under the supervision of professors Johan Meeusen and Mathieu Leloup.
  • You carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Faculty of Law of the University of Antwerp and its research group on Government and Law .

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in law or you will have obtained it by the time you start working.
  • You submit an English language research proposal for the research you will develop (see above). This proposal of maximum 5 pages includes the following headings: ‘state of the art’, ‘research objectives’, ‘methodology’ and ‘bibliography’. The proposal should allow you to successfully complete the PhD in 4 years.

  • You can demonstrate excellent study results, particularly in the field of the law of the European Union. You substantiate this with a detailed overview of your study results (see 'Want to apply?').
  • You have a particular interest in scientific research in the field of the law of the European Union.
  • You have excellent language skills that permit high-level academic research in the field of the law of the European Union. Apart from active and passive knowledge of English, you have at least a passive knowledge of French and preferably also of German. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset.

About the job

Our group is looking for highly motivated talented individual to conduct cutting edge research in the realm of opportunistic CT and machine learning, with a special focus on Deep Learning. Salary

The position is fixed-term for 4 years as of 01.05.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

Position and salary

As a Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher/Doctoral Researcher (Sustainability Law), you will be based at the UEF Law School, which is the leading Finnish research institution in the fields of natural resources, climate change, energy, and environmental law. The UEF Law School hosts the Centre for Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Law (CCEEL), which has emerged as an international hub for high-quality research in these fields. CCEEL brings together a dozen professors, nearly 20 senior researchers, and more than 50 PhD students.

The Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher/Doctoral Researcher position will be part of the KATKO project exploring the legal and economic foundations of sustainability transformation. The project is funded by the Saastamoinen Foundation. Thematically the project will focus particularly on the legal challenges and trade-offs arising from ambitious climate and energy, biodiversity and nature restoration and environmental status targets set by the European Union, both within the EU legal system itself, as well as within any given Member State legal systems in transposition and implementation.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher/Doctoral Researcher (Sustainability Law), your main responsibilities will include:

  • carrying out independent, high-quality, project-based research, including literature reviews, case studies, doctrinal analysis, and interviews;
  • actively contributing to the research team at UEF through collaborative project work, sharing insights and expertise, and participating in team meetings and discussions;
  • preparing high-quality scientific publications;
  • teaching activities at the postgraduate level (up to 15% FTE for postdoctoral position and up to 5% for doctoral researcher and project research positions).

The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 May 2024 onwards (or as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of staff. In the case that the successful applicant is at the doctoral researcher level, the initial contract will be signed for one year and the contract is then extended by one additional year once the applicant has gained the PhD study right in the UEF Law School’s doctoral programme.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher, the job-related salary element is EUR 3,213.15 /month, based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is EUR 2,222.83 – 2,775.28 /month, based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element can be between 6–50% of the above-mentioned sums.

Our requirements

We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

  • A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (law, political science, or similar) by the time they start in the position. If the doctoral degree has been awarded less than five years ago, the post will be one of a Postdoctoral Researcher. If the doctoral degree has been awarded more than five years ago, the post will be one of a Project Researcher. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves or military service.
  • If the position is filled as a doctoral position, the applicant must possess a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (law, political science, or similar) and must meet the eligibility and admission criteria of the UEF’s Doctoral Programme in Law. In this case, the candidate shall be appointed to be a Doctoral Researcher and the employment contract is contingent on the applicant obtaining a study right for a PhD degree in law at the UEF Law School.
  • A strong track record of carrying out research in the area of sustainability, climate, energy, or environmental law, or general EU law.
  • Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research and working as part of a team.
  • An affinity for various research methods.
  • An excellent command of English (both for writing and general communication purposes).

Immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment by enhancing the immune system's anti-cancer capabilities. Despite its success, the heterogeneous response among patients and the distinct sensitivity observed in primary tumors versus metastases necessitate a more profound understanding. Recent studies have pinpointed metabolic pathways as vulnerabilities within the tumor's immune microenvironment. However, the impact of local nutrient conditions on metabolic reprogramming and T cell function remains largely unexplored. To tackle this gap, our laboratory is dedicated to unraveling the metabolic competition between T cells and tumor cells in distinct metabolic niches. Our objective is to modulate their metabolic activity, promoting T cell infiltration into metabolically challenging areas where immune cells can effectively eliminate tumor cells, achieving a comprehensive response to immunotherapy. Employing cutting-edge techniques such as imaging mass spectrometry, multiplex flow cytometry, and 13C tracer analysis, our research aims to contribute crucial insights to the field. Website unit

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will have the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of cancer biology, immunology, and metabolism. The candidate will perform basic/cell biology & preclinical research related to the main research focus of our lab. The candidate is expected to:

  • Design and execute high-quality experiments.
  • Closely collaborate and supervise PhDs, technicians, and master students involved in the project.

Profile

  • You have experience working with mouse models and mammalian cell cultures, molecular biology techniques (cloning, western blot, qPCR..), and immunology analysis.
  • Bioinformatic experience (analysis of large-omics experiments) is a plus.
  • You are highly motivated and independent.
  • You work well in a team.
  • You have experience in coordinating multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
  • You have a solid publication record in this field.
  • You are fluent in English.

Key responsibilities

The group of Dr. Joachim Van Guyse at the Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research (LACDR) has an opening for 1 PhD position in synthetic polymer chemistry. The PhD student will participate in a project focused on engineering polymers for the delivery of nucleic acids, messenger (m)RNA in particular. The overall aim of the research is to develop novel poly(2-oxazoline)-polypeptide block-copolymers, lipid-polymer conjugates, and nucleic acid formulations thereof by employing new synthetic methodologies and state-of-the-art techniques.

The research topic in this position involves the development of structure-activity relationships of the synthesized block-copolymers and lipid-polymer conjugates in the development of nucleic acid formulations to facilitate systemic circulation and improve the biodistribution of nucleic acid therapeutics.

Objectives: 1) Synthesis and characterization of poly(2-oxazline)-polypeptide block copolymers and poly(2-oxazline)-lipid conjugates, bioconjugation of targeting ligands and conjugation of imaging moieties 2) formulation development using state-of-art techniques, e.g. microfluidics; 3) in-depth physicochemical characterization of the formulations, followed by in vitro and in vivo evaluation of selected systems with respect to gene expression, cellular uptake, mRNA stability, biodistribution and circulation.

Selection criteria

  • A Master’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical sciences, or Biomedical sciences, or a related field;
  • Expertise in chemical synthesis, ideally in polymer synthesis and/or material science
  • Interest in formulation development; in vitro and in vivo assays, and biotherapeutic delivery
  • Strong communication skills in the group and with collaborators;
  • Proficiency in English;
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills (efficient time management).
