Position Summary

The Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance (HPA) at Oregon is seeking qualified applicants for its open postdoctoral scholar (postdoc) pool. As a postdoc, you will conduct research under the direction of a Principal Investigator (PI) for the purpose of acquiring research training. Your responsibilities will include conducting laboratory research, quantitative analysis, preparing manuscripts and grant applications, and presenting data and findings to internal and external audiences. In this position, you will have an opportunity to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

Postdocs are limited duration, funding contingent appointments for one year with a possible annual renewal for up to two additional years.

Position Summary

The Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon invites applications for potential research assistant, research associate, and postdoctoral scholar positions. Positions are available on an ongoing basis to conduct research within different research groups. These positions are funding contingent and temporary in nature, potentially renewable for up to a total of three years. In limited circumstances, there is the possibility of renewal beyond three years based on programmatic need, funding, and performance.

Postdoctoral Scholar appointees will conduct research under the direction of a faculty member for the purpose of acquiring research training.

Minimum Requirements

Position Summary

Our lab has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate. Are you interested in aging, biomarkers, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), machine learning, driving/community mobility, and/or geographic information systems? This may be the role for you. This position advances three ongoing NIH/NIA R01-funded grants investigating the long-term impact of AD brain pathology on functional behavior among persons with and without preclinical AD. Our research collects clinical, neurological, and neuropsychological data, mood, social determinants of health, a standardized road test, and naturalistic driving behavior using the Driving Real-world In-Vehicle Evaluation System. We also collect biomarkers to study AD pathology, including brain imaging (Positron Emission Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and fluid-based (cerebrospinal fluid, blood/plasma) biomarkers.

We now seek a postdoctoral research associate with strong statistical skills to analyze high fidelity data relating to whether daily driving behavior reflects underlying neuropathological AD and is associated with prevalent and incident cognitive impairment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative, and growing laboratory, and will work directly with Dr. Ganesh Babulal to develop new models to examine and visualize changes in driving behavior. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with world leaders in AD research, including experts in fluid biomarkers, brain imaging, genetics, and cognitive assessments. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups.

This appointment is viewed as a training or transitional period preparatory to an academic, industrial, governmental, or other full-time research or teaching career.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):

  • Develops working knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, aging, and driving.
  • Develops proficiency in analytical skills with a particular focus on longitudinal analysis.
  • Manages their projects based on large datasets, which should lead to at least three first-author publications/annually.
  • Develops proficiency in their ancillary skills, e.g., writing, public speaking, networking, critical evaluation of scientific documents, etc.
  • Presents scientific work both inside and outside the university.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research.
  • Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members, and all members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable university policies, procedures, and regulations.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

The Bertaccini Lab within the Stanford Department of Anesthesiology seeks an individual at the postdoctoral level with interest and expertise in molecular modeling related to protein homology modeling, ligand docking and drug design to develop the next generation of safer anesthetics. Specifically, this individual will initially be an integral developer of a large series of homology models of GABA receptors composed of variations in the available subunits. These models will be used to dock the few ligands available which are currently known to have GABAAR-slow subtype specificity in an effort to identify which subunits may characterize this feature. The most favorably interacting models will be tested in vitro, and then utilized for the subsequent phases of drug design, testing. Drug design will also involve molecular modeling methodologies to include but not limited to high throughput receptor-based screening, fragment-based design and modification, toxicity and bioavailability predictions. We have licenses for the full complement of Schrodinger and Discovery Studio Software packages.

As part of our overall endeavor, lead compounds will be subsequently subject to in vitro patch clamp affinity analyses and characterizations of the slow functional subtype with hippocampal brain slice electrophysiology. We will further characterize the compounds’ effects on in vitro iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes as a prediction of hemodynamic stability, and the effect on mitochondrial oxygen consumption and free radical production for prediction of potential tissue preservation. We will create formulations of our lead compounds and characterize their in vivo effects on levels of consciousness, response to painful stimuli and the standard battery of physiologic vital functions in rats after both intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) injection. The resulting drug should allow immediate transition into more advanced drug pipelines which could include formal dose finding and PK/PD studies as well as higher mammalian models for eventual GLP and Pre-IND studies. This will work have vast implications in both the civilian realm (trauma, extremes of age, critically ill, etc) as well as the military realm (battlefield trauma, long term space flight, antidotes to chemical weapons, etc.). FDA Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Office of Vaccine Research and Review (OVRR) at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland. Research Project: A postdoctoral research fellowship is available to study how SARS-CoV-2 variants escapes neutralization and the mechanism of spike-mediated virus entry into cells. Research includes assessments of neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 variants by serum following vaccinations and infections and elucidation of spike structure-function relationships that balance immune evasion and efficient virus entry into cells. Research methods will be done in standard biosafety 2 level labs. Learning Objectives: The participant will learn about analyzing antibody responses to new SARS-CoV-2 variants and how to elucidate structure-function relationships in the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 variants that affect antigenicity, immunogencity, and virus entry into cells. This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at FDA.  OPM can complete a background investigation only for individuals, including non-US Citizens, who have resided in the US for a total of three of the past five years. FDA Ethics Requirements If an ORISE Fellow, to include their spouse and minor children, reports what is identified as a Significantly Regulated Organization (SRO) or prohibited investment fund financial interest in any amount, or a relationship with an SRO, except for spousal employment with an SRO, and the individual will not voluntarily divest the financial interest or terminate the relationship, then the individual is not placed at FDA. FDA requires ORISE participants to read and sign their FDA Education and Training Agreement within 30 days of his/her start date, setting forth the conditions and expectations for his/her educational appointment at the agency.  This agreement covers such topics as the following:
  • Non-employee nature of the ORISE appointment;
  • Prohibition on ORISE Fellows performing inherently governmental functions;
  • Obligation of ORISE Fellows to convey all necessary rights to the FDA regarding intellectual property conceived or first reduced to practice during their fellowship;
  • The fact that research materials and laboratory notebooks are the property of the FDA;
  • ORISE fellow’s obligation to protect and not to further disclose or use non-public information.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields or currently pursuing with an expected graduation date before May 31, 2024. Degree must have been received within the past five years. Preferred skills:

Postdoctoral Associate - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology - Smith Lab Applications are invited for a fulltime Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at Cornell University. This Postdoctoral Associate position will advance undergraduate biology education by examining how Vision and Change (V&C) principles are being enacted in biology courses across a variety of undergraduate institutions. They will have the opportunity to explore the breadth of existing educational resources, to evaluate progress toward goals outlined in V&C, and to identify opportunities for future growth in undergraduate biology education. This project is part of a collaboration that includes Drs. Brian Couch (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and MacKenzie Stetzer (University of Maine). This project will focus on the use of open educational resources (OERs). The research will involve analyzing data from a scoping review of OER article content from a variety of journals (e.g., CourseSource), surveying authors and users to determine their engagement with OERs, developing student assessments, and observing instructors teaching with OERs in a variety of classrooms. The primary duties and responsibilities include quantitative and qualitative analysis of a large data set from a scoping review, developing and deploying surveys, designing protocols to observe instructors teaching with OERs, and analyzing student and instructor data. There will be opportunities to engage with instructors in professional development activities. The successful candidate will disseminate the results through publications and presentations at meetings. Discipline-based education research is an important area of study at Cornell, with collaborators (faculty, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students) in physics, biology, engineering, and other STEM fields. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to mentor and work with many individuals and participate in weekly education journal clubs and research meetings with the larger EEB and Cornell community. Host-Pathogen Interactions / Inflammation / Immunity

Two postdoctoral research positions are available for highly motivated candidates to investigate inflammation and innate immunity in the skin and mucosal tissues during viral infections and chronic/recurring diseases. Experimental models will include in vitro assays, conventional and organoid cell cultures, and knockout/transgenic mice. The studies aim to: 1) identify novel extra- and intracellular inflammatory and/or viral restriction mechanisms, 2) determine how these processes are regulated to maintain homeostasis, and 3) establish connections to human diseases, including cancer and chronic inflammatory conditions, when the pathways are dysregulated.

Project 1 will focus on viral infections.

Project 2 will examine connections between inflammation and cancer.

Requirements: A recent Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, microbiology and/or virology. Peer-reviewed publications in the field(s) of immunology, virology and/or signal transduction. Training in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, signal transduction, cell culture methods, and/or mouse models of disease. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Must be willing and able to handle mice and infectious materials.

Position Summary

The Kulkarni lab is a NIH-funded laboratory in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Washington University. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to drive how innate immune responses, such as the complement system, modulate mucosal immunity. The overarching goal of our research program is to determine how epithelial cell-derived proteins can be harnessed to mitigate the risk of acute lung injury in various settings, to ultimately reduce the burden of end-stage lung disease. We have active projects investigating lung injury due to bacterial infections and the short- and long-term consequences of ischemia-reperfusion injury occurring in the context of lung transplantation. There are aspects of overlap in the gut-lung axis using similar model systems. We utilize state-of-the-art technical modalities including conditional knockout mouse models, flow cytometry, ELISA, protein and DNA-based molecular biology, biochemistry, cell/tissue culture, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, and DNA/RNA sequencing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):

  • Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
  • Develops expertise in protein biochemistry, and genetic manipulation of cells and mice.
  • Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
  • Presents scientific work, both within and outside the University.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research as they develop their writing skills.
  • Designs research experiments.
  • Evaluates research findings and reports results.
  • Conscientious discharge of his/her research responsibilities.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with his/her mentors regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and records findings.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
