7.7 magnitude earthquake on the coasts of Jamaica, Cuba and the Caymans

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the coasts of Jamaica, Cuba and the Caymans on Tuesday, surprising people as far away as Miami and causing official tsunami warnings for much of the Caribbean, which were later withdrawn .

The earthquake, originally reported to have a magnitude of 7.3 before being improved, was centered 86 miles northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 87 miles west-southwest of Niquero , in Cuba, at a depth of only 6 miles, according to the US Geological Survey. It struck at 2:10 p.m. ET.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury, but social media was inundated with photo and video messages from people documenting the event. In the Cayman Islands, a video shows damaged streets and chasms opened by violent tremors.

A tsunami warning has been issued for a large part of the Caribbean. However, it was later canceled.

Knolly Moses, a director of advertising in Jamaica, told NPR that the earthquake was long and strong, with the walls of his office waving.

“This one was serious. He put the fear of God in many people today, ”he said.
